Hello everyone. I hope you are feeling great today, fellow anime fans... this time I bring you my personal review with my opinions of the anime Gangsta. An anime that the truth, when I saw it, left me with some doubts and some mixed feelings, but well, let's dive a little deeper into this dark and violent world. As some of you may or may not know, Gangsta takes us to the city of Ergastulum, a place you wouldn't want to visit even in your worst nightmares, that's for sure... imagine a mix between Gotham City and the worst neighborhood in your city, and even so, I think you'd fall pretty short... In this place full of doom, we meet Worick and Nicolas, two guys who are dedicated to doing the dirty jobs no one else wants to do... they're like janitors of the underworld, sort of.
The first thing that might catch your attention in this anime is the visual style it has, here there is no pastel colors, no cute girls with huge eyes... in this series the aesthetics becomes much more rough and realistic! It even makes you feel that at any moment anyone can be assaulted, it's the typical design that is solid, dark and transmits that feeling of violence or danger that would transmit any dangerous neighborhood in your city...
The character design is also in the same style, although some secondary characters may seem a little more generic... but I'm sure that the design is the least that will worry you when you're watching all the bullets and swords that will jump everywhere during the episodes... And just when it comes to action I feel Gangsta doesn't disappoint, the fights seemed well choreographed and have that touch of brutality that keeps you watching. Nicolas in particular is a machine of destruction with his sword, it's as if you were watching Kenshin Shimura, but if he was transported to another era and was born in the dark side of the city with a serious deafness problem.. this mainly because Nicolas is deaf, and I feel this is where the anime gains some extra points for me...
The portrayal of a hearing impaired character is handled quite respectfully and adds an interesting layer to the dynamic between the main characters, here it's not about using a disability like deafness as a method of mockery or just to make stupid jokes, it's taken with the seriousness it deserves. The voice actor does a phenomenal job as well, he manages to capture all the energy of someone who can't hear his own voice, I found it interesting how he conveys and communicates this feeling and the thoughts of this character.
Hola a todos. Espero que se encuentren genial en el día de hoy, amigos fanáticos del anime.. en esta ocasión les traigo mi reseña personal con mis opiniones del anime Gangsta. Un anime que la verdad, cuando lo vi, me dejó con ciertas dudas y algunos sentimientos encontrados, pero bueno, vamos a sumergirnos un poco más en este mundo oscuro y violento. Como algunos de ustedes sabrán, o otros no, Gangsta nos transporta a la ciudad de Ergastulum, un lugar que no querrías visitar ni en tus peores pesadillas, eso es seguro.. imagínense una mezcla entre Ciudad Gótica y el peor barrio de tu ciudad, y aún así, creo que se quedarían bastante cortos.. En este lugar lleno de perdición, conoceremos a Worick y a Nicolas, dos tipos que se dedican a hacer los trabajos sucios que nadie más quiere hacer.. son como los conserjes del inframundo, algo así.
Lo primero que puede llamar la atención en este anime es el estilo visual que tiene, aquí no hay nada de colores pastel, ni chicas lindas con ojos enormes.. en esta serie la estética se vuelve mucho más ruda y realista! Incluso te hace sentir que en cualquier momento pueden asaltar a cualquier persona, es el típico diseño que es sólido, oscuro y que transmite esa sensación de violencia o peligro que transmitiría cualquier barrio peligroso de tu ciudad..
El diseño de personajes va también con este mismo estilo, aunque algunos secundarios pueden parecer un poco más genéricos.. pero estoy seguro que el diseño es lo menos que les va a preocupar cuando estén viendo todos los balazos y espadazos que van a saltar por todos lados en el transcurso de los episodios.. Y justamente cuando hablamos de acción siento que Gangsta no decepciona, las peleas me parecieron bien coreografiadas y tienen ese toque de brutalidad que te hace mantener la mirada. Nicolas en particular es una máquina de destrucción con su espada, es como si estuvieras viendo a Kenshin Shimura, pero si lo fuera transportado a otra época y hubiera nacido en el lado oscuro de la ciudad con un grave problema de sordera.. esto principalmente porque Nicolás es sordo, y siento que aquí es donde el anime gana ciertos puntos extra para mí..
La representación de un personaje con discapacidad auditiva está manejada con bastante respeto y añade una capa interesante a la dinámica entre los protagonistas, aquí no se trata de usar una discapacidad como la sordera como método de burla o solo para hacer chistes estúpidos, sino que se toma con la seriedad que se merece. El actor de voz hace un trabajo fenomenal también, logra capturar toda la energía de alguien que no puede oír su propia voz, me pareció interesante el cómo se transmite y comunica esta sensación y los pensamientos de este personaje.
But it's not all action in Gangsta. The series also tries to build a complex world with a believable backstory about the Twilights, genetically modified humans who rely on a drug called Celebrer... I found it an interesting concept, though at times I felt the anime bit off more than it could chew with only 12 episodes. And here comes my biggest criticism of this series, Gangsta suffers from what I would call saturation.... There are so many characters, factions and subplots that sometimes I felt like I was watching a sort of Game of Thrones Yakuza version... don't get me wrong, I love it when a series has depth, it's something that manages to attract quite a bit, but here it seems like they wanted to cram the whole manga into one season, and the result seemed a bit chaotic to me.
The main story focuses on these two characters, Worick and Nicolas, along with Alex, a former prostitute who joins their business, I liked how the relationship between these three develops, especially how Nicolas appears to be serious and distant, but little by little he shows his more human side. However, just when you start to get attached to these characters and the relationship they are forming, the anime decides it's time to introduce you to like 20 more characters and their respective life stories and motivations, all at the same time, without stopping at any point... this can be a bit confusing and shocking for some people.
Pero todo no es acción en Gangsta. La serie también intenta construir un mundo complejo con una historia de fondo creíble sobre los Twilights, humanos modificados genéticamente que dependen de una droga llamada Celebrer.. me pareció un concepto interesante, aunque a veces sentí que el anime mordió más de lo que podía masticar con solo 12 episodios. Y aquí viene mi mayor crítica a esta serie, Gangsta sufre lo que yo lo llamaría saturación.. Hay tantos personajes, facciones y subtramas que a veces me sentía como si estuviera viendo una especie de Game of Thrones versión Yakuza.. no me malinterpreten, me encanta cuando una serie tiene profundidad, es algo que logra atraer bastante, pero aquí parece que quisieron meter todo el manga en una sola temporada, y el resultado me pareció un poco caótico.
La historia principal se centra en estos dos personajes, Worick y Nicolas, junto con Alex, una ex prostituta que se une a su negocio, me gustó cómo se desarrolla la relación entre estos tres, especialmente como Nicolas aparenta ser serio y distante, poco a poco va mostrando su lado más humano.. Sin embargo, justo cuando empiezas a encariñarte con estos personajes y con la relación que están formando, el anime decide que es hora de presentarte como 20 personajes más y sus respectivas historias de vida y motivaciones, todo al mismo tiempo, sin parar en ningún momento.. esto puede ser algo confuso y chocante para algunas personas.
I feel that this series alternates between the present and some flashbacks of the past of the main characters in a weird way.... When it works it's great and helps you understand the characters much better, but there are other times when these time jumps can be a bit abrupt, it left me wondering if I had accidentally put a chapter that was not, because what I was seeing did not match well with what I should be watching... The soundtrack deserves a special mention... I feel that the opening is a really good theme song, it gives a lot of energy and puts you in kick ass mode... the rest of the music also accompanied the other scenes well, although it's nothing to write home about...
One of the things that did impress me was the audio work to represent the world from Nicolas' perspective, these details were very good... Talking about the ending of this series, I think that without going into spoilers, Gangsta ends in a very strange and complicated way, I found it quite frustrating, especially because they didn't bring us this anime in its best moment, and once it ended, this studio ended very badly... The closing of the story doesn't feel satisfying at all and I think knowing the context, after watching the series, I already know why these results.
El ritmo de narración considero que también es algo que no me termino de convencer.. siento que esta serie alterna entre el presente y algunos flashbacks del pasado de los protagonistas de una forma rara.. Cuando funciona es genial y te ayuda a entender mucho mejor a los personajes, pero hay otras veces en las que estos saltos temporales pueden ser algo abruptos, me dejaron preguntándome si accidentalmente había puesto un capítulo que no era, porque lo que estaba viendo no concordaba bien con lo que tendría que estar viendo.. La banda sonora merece una mención especial.. siento que el opening es un temazo muy bueno, da mucha energía y te pone en el modo de patear traseros.. el resto de la música también acompañaba bien a las demás escenas, aunque no es nada del otro mundo..
Una de las cosas que sí me impresionó fue el trabajo de audio para representar el mundo desde la perspectiva de Nicolas, estos detalles estuvieron muy buenos.. Hablando del final de esta serie, creo que sin entrar en spoilers, Gangsta termina de una manera muy extraña y complicada, a mí me pareció bastante frustrante, especialmente porque no nos trajeron este anime en su mejor momento, y una vez finalizado, este estudio acabó muy mal.. El cierre de la historia no se siente para nada satisfactorio y creo que sabiendo el contexto, después de ver la serie, ya sé el porqué de estos resultados.
Gangsta is like a fast food that you can order late at night after a party... you know it's not the best food, or that it won't do you much good, but you still order it because it leaves you wanting more, and it's something that deep down you know is decent.... This anime has its flaws, but it also has some brilliant moments that can hook you, I opine, that if you like darker, mature anime, with violence and shooting, well you probably won't mind being left with some unanswered questions. Just don't expect it to be an anime masterpiece, as some may have said.
I give it a 6.5/10 rating. It had potential to be something great, but it falls quite short due to pacing issues and information overload. Still, I feel it's a relevant experience you could try if you're tired of the typical shonen or romantic comedies.. and well, that would be all for today. Gangsta es como una comida rápida que puedes pedir a altas horas de la noche después de una fiesta.. sabes que no es la mejor comida, o que no te hará muy bien, pero igual la pides porque te deja con ganas de más, y es algo que en el fondo sabes que está decente.. Este anime tiene sus defectos, pero también tiene algunos momentos brillantes que pueden engancharte, opino, que si te gustan los animes más oscuros, maduros, con violencia y disparos, pues seguramente no te importará quedarte con algunas preguntas sin responder. Solo no esperen que sea una obra maestra del anime, como algunos pueden ser que hayan dicho.
Yo le doy una calificación de 6.5/10. Tenía potencial para ser algo grande, algo genial, pero se queda bastante corto debido a los problemas de ritmo y la sobrecarga de información. Aun así, siento que es una experiencia relevante que podrían probar si están cansados de los típicos shonen o comedias románticas.. y bueno, esto sería todo por hoy. Espero que se cuiden, que la pasen bien, les dejaré el opening por aquí abajo para que le den un vistazo, cuéntenme si han visto esta serie, si le darán una oportunidad y demás cosas. Si luce bastante oscura y eso me llama la atención, sin embargo , me frustran las series que tratan de condensar muchas cosa en tan pocos capítulos porque uno de queda un poco perdido, no obstante creo que me convenció tu comparación con Kenshin así que la buscaré apenas tenga un chance 😄 Saludos

Gangsta! It's definitely one of my favorite underrated anime—the fight scenes were definitely on fire. I somehow have a different opinion about the flashbacks, tho. The flashbacks are mostly on point and really informative, especially when you're an inquisitive viewer or the detective type of viewer. Since I'm guiltily one of these detective viewers, I really pause some of the flashbacks just to analyze some details that I may have missed.
Its plot was riddled with a lot of mysteries, and the flashbacks somehow shed light on those mysteries. The ending was something that somehow disappointed me because it was really hanging, but I kinda understand why it ended abruptly because of the lack of source material. Like me, the creator has SLE (tho hers is more active than mine) and I really understand that she can't draw that actively like before. She's still active in X, tho, but it's more like her promoting her other works. I'm still hoping that she can still finish the manga...
