Continuing with the films of Ghibli Studios, today it was the turn of Whispers of the Heart with a screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki (Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, The Walking Castle, among others) and is based on the manga of the same name by Aoi Hiiragi and was published in 1995. Like other films from the studio it is full of valuable learnings but there is also an important reference that perhaps “Ghibli lovers” will recognize instantly.
Siguiendo con las películas de Estudios Ghibli, hoy le tocó el turno a Susurros del Corazón con un guión de Hayao Miyazaki (Ponyo, mi vecino Totoro, El castillo ambulante, entre otros) y está basada en el manga homónimo de Aoi Hiiragi y fue publicada en 1995. Al igual que otras películas del estudio está llena de valiosos aprendizajes pero además también hay una referencia importante que quizá los "Ghibli lovers" reconocerán al instante.
Overview/Resumen
Shizuku Tsukishima loves to read, she is always in the library asking for books to take home, suddenly she discovers a recurring name in the library loan cards, Seiji Amasawa, she begins to investigate who he is until she discovers that he is a boy from her same school, a boy that to top it all she disliked because of his insidious comments, however the link that unites them is that this boy is the grandson of the owner of the antique store that Shizuku used to visit because she liked him a lot, especially because of a certain article that I will tell you about later. They both get to know each other better, then Seiji tells Shizuku that his dream is to become a great luthier (maker and restorer of stringed instruments) and seeing that he has really been putting his heart into his dream and even plans to travel to Italy to study, she also sets out to test her talent, that of being a writer, so she decides to write a novel based on the story of the antique store owner, and receives a valuable lesson from him, we all have a beautiful gem inside and we just have to polish it every day to make it shine with its own light.
Shizuku Tsukishima ama leer, siempre está en la biblioteca pidiendo libros para llevarse a casa, de pronto descubre un nombre recurrente en las fichas de préstamo de la Biblioteca, Seiji Amasawa, ella comienza a investigar quien es hasta que descubre que es un chico de su misma escuela, un chico que para colmo le caía mal por sus comentarios insidiosos, no obstante el nexo que los une es que este chico es nieto del dueño de la tienda de antigüedades que Shizuku solía visitar porque le gustaba mucho, sobre todo por cierto artículo del que les hablaré más adelante. Ambos se dan la oportunidad de conocerse mejor, entonces Seiji le cuenta a Shizuku que su sueño es convertirse en un gran luthier (fabricante y restaurador de instrumentos de cuerda) y al ver que realmente él ha venido poniéndole empeño a su sueño y que incluso planea viajar a Italia para estudiar, ella también se propone poner a prueba su talento, el de ser escritora, así que decide escribir una novela basada en la historia del dueño de la tienda de antigüedades, y recibe una valiosa lección de su parte, todos tenemos una hermosa gema en el interior y solo debemos pulirla cada día para hacer que brille con luz propia.

My Opinion/Mi Opinión
I like to be completely honest with you in my opinion, so I will not lie to you, I must confess that at the beginning this movie bored me, well, I got bored during a good part of the movie because it has a very, very slow pace, too much, I would say, so it is not exactly my favorite movie from Ghibli Studios, this along with Princess Mononoke is in my personal ranking of the movies that I liked the least, however that does not mean that I do not recognize the main message it conveys, and neither the resources used for it, especially the fact that we can see a character that later would be part of another film of the studio, I refer of course to the Baron, this time it is only a figurine of a cat that serves as inspiration for Shizuku's novel, however this comes to life in his imagination and is who serves as a guide in his fantastic journeys (moment in which the film becomes much more interesting, at least for me) Years later the Ghibli studios returned to use the image of this sophisticated character in another film, The Return of the Cat.
Me gusta ser completamente honesta con ustedes en mi opinión, así que no les mentiré, debo confesar que al inicio esta película me aburrió, bueno, me aburrí durante buena parte de la película ya que tiene un ritmo muy pero muy lento, demasiado, diría yo, así que no es precisamente mi película favorita de los estudios Ghibli, esta junto con La Princesa Mononoke está en mi ranking personal de las películas que menos me gustaron, no obstante eso no significa que yo no reconozca el mensaje principal que transmite, y tampoco los recursos utilizados para ello, sobre todo el hecho de que podemos ver un personaje que más adelante formaría parte de otra película del estudio, me refiero desde luego al Barón, en esta ocasión se trata solamente de la figurita de un gato que sirve como inspiración para la novela de Shizuku, sin embargo este cobra vida en su imaginación y es quien sirve como guía en sus travesías fantásticas (momento en el que el film se vuelve mucho más interesante, al menos para mi) Años más tarde los estudios Ghibli volvieron a usar la imagen de este sofisticado personaje en otra película, El Retorno del Gato.
Books are partly the protagonists of this story, we see them with marked relevance in Shizuku's house, in the antique store and of course in the library, perhaps it is an allegory that a book, bookstores or libraries, can become connections between individuals and others, stories make us identify with others while bookstores and libraries often tend to be meeting places. Cats are also an important part of the film, on the one hand the Baron represents enduring and persevering love, and on the other hand, the cat that Shizuku sees on the train at the beginning, acts as a guide both for her as a character and for us as an audience, we see him in the opening credits scenes of the film, he is in places that we will later recognize, and his goal is to mark the places that will be important within the plot, and later we see the protagonist follow him until he reaches the antique store, that is, he takes her to a point where she will end up discovering her true vocation.
Los libros son en parte los protagonistas de esta historia, los vemos con marcada relevancia en la casa de Shizuku, en la tienda de antigüedades y desde luego en la biblioteca, tal vez es una alegoría a que un libro, librerías o bibliotecas, pueden llegar a ser conexiones entre unos individuos y otros, las historias nos hacen identificarnos con otros mientras que las librerías y bibliotecas muchas veces suelen ser lugares de encuentro. Los gatos también forman parte importante del film, por un lado el Barón representa al amor duradero y perseverante, y por otro lado, el gato que Shizuku ve en el tren al inicio, actúa como guía tanto de ella como personaje, como de nosotros como audiencia, al inicio lo vemos en las escenas de créditos que dan inicio al film, él está en lugares que más tarde reconoceremos, y su objetivo es marcar los lugares que serán importantes dentro de la trama, y posteriormente vemos a la protagonista seguirlo hasta llegar a la tienda de antigüedades, es decir, que la lleva hasta un punto en el que ella terminará descubriendo su verdadera vocación.
I think the music plays a very important role in this film, it serves as a connection between both main characters, The song 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' by John Denver and originally sung by Olivia Newton-John defines very well that feeling that Shizuku doesn't quite find, but as she does the translation of the song she starts to connect with it. On the other hand I like how she is able to realize that Seiji has a well defined north, he knows what he wants and is working hard to get it, this gives her enough inspiration she needs to discover her own vocation as well, that is, mutual love is important but so is self-love, working towards your interests, what you like or would like to do, discovering your talent. And that is precisely what the central theme of the film is about, she discovers at some point, thanks to her novel and the constructive and totally sincere criticism she receives from Seiji's grandfather, that she is good at writing but that she must keep working to polish her skills. And that is how life is, we are all like the rough stone mentioned in the movie, we all have great abilities within us, but we must work every day to improve those skills and surpass ourselves, otherwise we would only remain common stones.
Creo que la música juega un papel muy importante en este film, sirve como conexión entre ambos personajes protagonistas, La canción de ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ de John Denver y cantada originalmente por Olivia Newton-John define muy bien ese sentimiento que Shizuku no termina de encontrar, pero a medida que ella hace la traducción de la canción comienza a conectarse con ella. Por otra parte me gusta como ella es capaz de darse cuenta que Seiji tiene un norte bien definido, él sabe lo que quiere y está trabajando duro para conseguirlo, esto le da a ella la inspiración suficiente que necesita para descubrir también su propia vocación, es decir, el amor mutuo es importante pero también lo es el amor propio, trabajar en pro de tus intereses, lo que te gusta o te gustaría hacer, descubrir tu talento. Y precisamente de eso se trata el tema central de la película, ella descubre en algún punto, gracias a su novela y a la crítica constructiva y totalmente sincera que recibe por parte del abuelo de Seiji, que es buena escribiendo pero que debe seguir trabajando para pulir sus habilidades. Y es que así es la vida, todos somos como la piedra en bruto que se menciona en la película, todos tenemos grandes capacidades en nuestro interior, pero debemos trabajar cada día en pro de ir mejorando esas habilidades y superarnos a nosotros mismos, de lo contrario solo segaríamos siendo piedras comunes.
And well, as I said, it is not my favorite movie, but mostly due to the very slow pace in which the events take place, but anyway I consider it a movie worth watching to appreciate the value of its message.
