Murder is the antithesis of this story. Human goodness is what must prevail in a chaotic world where power lies in the hands of two types of people: heroes and criminals. The struggle will always be between good and evil, but the essence of it all is harshness.
I must begin by saying that I’m not one of those people who enjoy hero stories. For me, the concept is overused; however, The Executioner is one of the manhwas I decided to read because of its appealing concept. I like the rawness it portrays; it’s a story that shows everything without any censorship.
What is this manhwa about? Seo Kangyu is a hero who watches his teammates being massacred, all in order to defeat the greatest villain the world has ever known. Everyone dies, and he, having the chance to kill the one who took each of his friends away, decides to uphold the law and the will of his leader: capture the villain, bring him to trial, and have him sentenced like any other human being. How noble and naive!
Everything he thought could happen simply turns into a nightmare that took away his friends and brother in an aberrant way. His brother was killed by the criminal that Seo Kangyu apprehended. His brother was compressed and turned into a sphere. As crude as you read, a sphere of human flesh.
This is a story written by Lee Jehwan and illustrated by the artist Park Bumjin. I must highlight Park’s artwork; it goes beyond anything I have seen. It is raw art that simultaneously portrays repulsive scenes. Everyone in this story is judged and can die in the cruelest ways.
Do you know what is most interesting in this story? Seo Kangyu decides to enter Ruculus Prison and assassinate all the villains who have escaped from their cells, breaking the promise he had made with Raosa.
The Ruculus prison is divided into levels. Each floor corresponds to the strength level of the villains. It’s incredible how Seo Kangyu faces them one by one, destroying them without any remorse. The hero has become the executioner.
The executioner is so strong that no villain can oppose his power; however, it is logical that Seo Kangyu, in Ruculus, begins to feel his strength drained after so many battles, and in the end, the psychological and physical burden becomes stronger than his will.
Currently, the manhwa is being released weekly, and the most ironic part is that each chapter carries a message that leaves the reader stunned. In one scene, Seo Kangyu has to decide whether to condemn children who have committed heinous crimes or forgive them. A very difficult dilemma; in the end, the answer didn’t come from him. That scene causes a cataclysm in Ruculus.
Do all the events occur in the prison? Obviously not. The world will now feel the fear of the villains, where there is no longer a hero who can maintain peace. The children will be persecuted, and powerless humans risk being exterminated.
The hero society debates what to do. The governments of each country feel the fear, and nothing can prevent the catastrophe. The world is in chaos, and there is no order. It’s a story that perfectly deconstructs what it means to be a hero in order to establish a new scenario.
I must dedicate a section to the dialogues and the way the art is developed. The flow of the dialogues is very good; they are not lengthy, and the battles become striking. The three-dimensionality of the art is very eye-catching; you can feel how each life is lost, and the horror of each scene solidifies. This last point is the most striking and remarkable.
“The Executioner” is a manhwa that uses the antihero archetype perfectly to establish a universe where everything is in chaos. What is intriguing is the way events unfold; heroes and villains die in an explicit manner. What you see in each of the scenes goes beyond what can be described in words. You simply have to read the manhwa and understand the rawness it shows.

Debo partir con el hecho de que no soy de las personas que les gustan las historias de héroes. Para mí, el concepto está muy trillado; sin embargo, “The Executioner” es uno de los manhwas que me animé a leer por su concepto atractivo. Me gusta la crudeza que muestra, es una historia que la muestra sin ningún tipo de censura.
¿De qué va este manhwa? Seo Kangyu es un héroe que ve cómo sus compañeros de equipo son masacrados únicamente para derrotar al mayor villano que ha conocido la tierra. Todos han muerto y él, pudiendo matar a quien le arrebató a cada uno de sus amigos, decidió cumplir la ley y la voluntad de su líder: apresar al villano, llevarlo a juicio y que se le aplicara una condena como cualquier ser humano. ¡Qué noble e ingenuo!

La sociedad de héroes debate que debe hacer. El gobierno de cada país siente el miedo y nada puede evitar la catástrofe. El mundo es un caos y no hay orden. Una historia que perfectamente descompone lo que significa ser héroe para consolidar un nuevo escenario.
Debo dedicar un apartado a los diálogos y a la manera en que se desarrolla el arte. La fluidez de los diálogos es muy buena, no es larga y las batallas se vuelven impactantes. La tridimensionalidad del arte es muy llamativa; se siente como cada vida se va perdiendo y se consolida el horror de cada una de las escenas. Esto último es lo más impactante y destacable.
“The Executioner” es un manhwa que usa perfectamente el arquetipo de antihéroes para consolidar un universo donde todo es un caos. Lo atrayente resulta en la manera en que ocurren los hechos; los héroes y villanos mueren de manera explícita. Lo que se ve en cada una de las escenas va más allá de lo que se puede describir en palabras. Simplemente debes leer el manhwa y entender la crudeza que se muestra.
