Jigoku Shoujo 「地獄少女」Hell Girl (2005, 26 episodes)

in The Anime Realm13 hours ago

Slow and mediocre show about supernatural revenge that victims can request from Hell Girl (and her team) for a price of their soul. Tormentors then briefly tormented before being sent to hell. The show is based upon excruciatingly repetitive pattern: a badness of antagonist is established until breaking point of their victim when the Hell Girl intervention is requested just before the end of the episode. A school bully, a stalker, another bully, a compassion-less vet doctor, a murderer, etc. -- those are profiles of people sent to hell by request of their victims. Every episode features different characters except for the hell girl who appears for less than a minute of a screen time, only to deliver the exact same contract terms and warning, spoken without variations. There is no character development (or any development), no story connecting episodes, no questions answered about Hell Girl, etc. Viewers get 25 variations of the same story with a different concluding episode.

The concept could have been so much more than this. And it looks like creators slowly (too slowly) realised that, but still lack imagination to make the show interesting. Eventually a freelance reporter character is introduced, investigating urban legends and following tracks of a Hell Girl.

Only in episode 12 an innocent man was sent to hell, after grievance was seemingly resolved. In episode 14 another man is wrongly condemned to hell, for something he was not guilty of.

Overall "Hell Girl" is a primitive show based on religious idea of justice attainable by supernatural means.

Not recommended.
