A lo largo de 64 episodios, la serie desarrolla cada arco argumental con maestría, conectando todos los elementos de la trama para llegar a un final satisfactorio. No hay cabos sueltos y cada personaje, incluso los secundarios, tienen su momento para brillar.
Los hermanos Elric son protagonistas entrañables, con una relación fraternal realista y conmovedora. Además, personajes como Roy Mustang, Riza Hawkeye, Scar, Ling Yao, Olivier Armstrong y los villanos homúnculos enriquecen la historia con sus propios conflictos y objetivos.

Aunque la serie adapta fielmente el manga, los primeros episodios avanzan muy rápido porque intenta diferenciarse de la primera versión del anime (Fullmetal Alchemist 2003). Esto puede hacer que algunos detalles importantes pasen desapercibidos al principio.
Aunque algunos homúnculos, como Envy o Wrath (King Bradley), son personajes excelentes, otros como Gluttony o Sloth no tienen tanto desarrollo y quedan algo planos en comparación con el resto del elenco.
Although the series faithfully adapts the manga, the first episodes move very quickly because it tries to differentiate itself from the first anime version (Fullmetal Alchemist 2003). This can make some important details go unnoticed at first.
