I feel it's pretty odd to make a review about this manga when the 2nd season of it's prequel's anime is to start airing later today. Yet due to lack of material, planning and it just happens to be what I've been reading recently so here we are.
After the Solo Leveling manga ended on December 29th 2023, it had 3 more chapters which were hints of a sequel brewing. I, a huge fan of the work at that time was pumped about it.
Yet after a few months, I switching manga apps a few times and losing my catalogue of manga's, plus there were also other manga's and anime series that were coming up.
So I forgot about the well awaited sequel.
At least, until a week ago...
Solo Leveling: Ragnarok
Plot
Again, the Earth is under threat from the gods of other universes. Seeking to fill the void left by the Absolute Being, Itarim invade earth and it's hunters, trying to strengthen their ranks.
Sung Jinwoo has no choice but to send Beru, the shadow ant king, to awaken his son's powers and start him on the journey he once took.
Now Sung Suhoi must conquer the shadow dungeons and earn his place in the world of hunters as he investigates and battle a whole new evil.
If there's one thing the Solo Leveling manga did well, it created the most satisfying ending.
A perfect mix of fulfillment and longing, leaving enough material for a next generation prequel such as this.
The era of Sung Jinwoo is over, he has leveled up to the point of a god, an overpowered infact. So there's no need for the manga to focus on him anymore.
Instead we go over to his son, a spitting image, yet different in his own subtle way.
I started reading this manga three days ago and I've noticed a lot of differences between it and the original Solo Leveling...
And actually that is a given, for if Naruto and Boruto has thought me anything, its the fact that the next generation would be bound to have its differences.
Yet unlike the Naruto-Boruto incident, I don't find myself outright hating this manga because of it's differences.
Given a lot of things are annoying, like the dry end forced humor and the lack of plot depth, plus the idea that Suho is just a prodigy who's managing of winning fights and such in one go.
I need me a high end adrenaline packed humbling moment like how Jinwoo first met Igris.
Yet like I said this manga is just starting. So I guess I'll just sit tight and see if they'll improve, or if these things that are still just minor annoyances ends up in me hating on the whole fandom.
Hopefully not though...
In other news, Solo Leveling season 2 is starting today and for ye strictly anime watchers, I'm here to tell you that you're in for lovely fights that'll leave you at the edge of your seats.
At least if the animation studio doesn't fluff things up...
