Ask Anime Week #48: An Anime with Unnecessary Subplot

TAR_contest.png

Ask Anime Question of the Week:

Name an Anime with Unnecessary Subplot?

It's an opinion. What's the anime that comes to mind where the major plot point / conflict has been established but along the way, there's subplot developing for the sake of twist or character development that's unnecessary to the main storyline? Hint: Anime with a lot of fillers are a common culprit.

Well, the first anime that comes to my mind is Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. I feel some of the first arcs doesn't add value to the main story and are just fillers.

In sports anime, I guess the first season of Prince of Tennis had a lot of fillers. xD Some of them are unrelated to the main plot like "Prince of Bowling" and the "TeniPuri family". They're quite entertaining to watch, though... However, some continue from the main plot but are quite unnecessary. I skipped some of them when I watched it the second time. lol I just want to watch the matches soooooon!!!!

Anyway, these fillers are more common in shonen anime like Naruto... xD

Bleach is the first one that comes to my mind. So many unnecessary subplots that completely stoles the spotlight from the main story line. Those subplots don't add anything important to the main story, being just a simple (and annoying) filler

P. S. I still like the main story tho

Fairy Tail immediately came to my mind... I'm really a fan of this anime but there are times that I find the subplots repetitive and maybe a little unnecessary. I really thought that it would end the time Zeref got defeated, but it turns out their adventure never ends until they die (which was fine for me tho). However, reusing the subplot of having another Fairy Tail in another place in their universe felt kinda off for me... Like ok, there's that Edolas who are totally opposite to the Earthland Fairy Tail, but then another one emerged later—the Fairynail which was a celebrity guild. It's funny seeing another version of them, but was it really necessary? I get the Edolas part because there's Mystogan and the lacrima that's part of the main plot..but Fairy Nail? I dunno.

Although I love Tokyo Ghoul, I must say that Tokyo Ghoul:Re was too much haha the end of the first part was epic and as one would expect such a complex plot to end, but well, the happy ending was expected for most people, although I consider that the way it ended was something original and out of the traditional 👌
