Hello, Extra Terrestrials!!!
It's been a long time since I've posted any art here. I've just been so busy dealing with family deaths and attending funerals. So there hasn't been much of any festive cheer these holidays.
What are you gonna do, right!?
Sometimes things suck.
This was a D&D commission I did for an acquaintance of mine. The brief was, in short, a Doctor set in a Spelljammer setting.
Sketches
So I went in walking on the concept (top left). I was looking for a Han Solo meets India Jones meet a steampunk physician. I liked the idea of looking like they are an explorer and researcher, that they travel looking for plants, creatures, etc anywhere to make and invent medicines.
Once I had my core idea of the look and themeing of the illustration, I went on to do the thumbnail sketches. Matt chose the fourth sketch and to be honest, I was hoping he'd choose that one because I really liked it too.
Work In Progress
As you can see, I had a preliminary go at the piece but felt that I was too far from the composition perspective I previously had in the sketch above. I then toned the black & white with a gradient map to start me out for laying colour.
Thank you for taking that little time to let me share with you.

Thank you so much, Alexa. It was my first time painting something like this. I learn a lot about doing backgrounds and environment.
Sorry to hear about the family tragedies! Glad to see you back with some art.
Thank you so much. Hopefully I'm back in the saddle for a little longer.
