You are what you Eat / Eres lo que Comes (ENG - ESP)

Who has not heard the expression “you are what you eat”? That common phrase was what inspired me to make the illustration (and brief animation in a Gif) that I present to you today. It is a curious blue character, with a charming smile, and who is eating… himself.

Proceso

I heard that expression recently on a cooking show. Perhaps it is true, but in a sense beyond the nutritional. That is, food represents our traditions and culture in a certain region, therefore, our identity. Another thing that I remembered with this was once when I visited a city here in Venezuela and a friend living there told me jokingly, but with a look that denoted a certain seriousness “if you want to get to know the city then you have to do two things: eat our street food and get drunk in our bars”. It didn't seem like a bad plan to me actually (hahahahaha).

Process

I started with the lines layer of the character. Here I was careful to place the lines corresponding to the head and the left arm in separate layer groups, since I had planned to add some independent movement to them in a Gif (which was the one you saw at the beginning of the publication). That's how it all started:

Now it's time to add colors. You can see in the following images that I used very bright colors on the character, such as the blue of the body and the purple of the bow on the neck.

Ahora agrego algunas sombras en los colores. Así quedó después de aplicar el sombreado:

Now I add some shadows on the colors. This is how it looked after applying the shading:

Finally I placed a very vivid green background and the iconic phrase that inspired this drawing. This was the final result:

I hope that the smiling character that I introduced to you today has pleased you. Until next time, dear friends, take good care of yourselves and don't forget to eat all your vegetables.

This one turned out super cool and funny... but serious at the same time. Your work was very clean, the colors were great, and the level of detail while yet maintaining the simplicity is really well done. It has a cartoony feel.... but seems more adult oriented. Great work.

Hello @castleberry, thanks for commenting.Yes, I like to make cartoon-style drawings but have a creepy content, I like that contrast. I recently heard a cartoonist in a Twitter space say that the fewer lines the better, hinting at keeping cartoons simple. Thanks again ✌️

Yes, keeping things streamlined can convey something more smoothly to the eye. My style is kind of the oppisite. I have so much busy things happening it's hard to know where you are supposed to look! hahaha
You're welcome bro! Cheers

I understand. I still haven't mastered the wonderful art of doing many things at once, hahahaha. Cheers broo! ✌️
