Yesterday I proposed an art contest to challenge everyone to make something to channel the emotions that are sizzling in the air this week. I will be participating as well and here is my first one... Alien Skies:
To start I began drawing in photoshop, then copy and pasting the layer over and over moving it a bit each time. The first draft looked something like this:
I played around with liquifying these layers and then started color filling the white areas, next evolution looked like this:
I then further distorted the image creating a 3D fractal and height mapping to arrive at this and then added some animation to give it a breathing effect:
Come join the contest here: Art Catharsis
To follow on twitter, personal account, Alien Community account <3
This is cool. It has a lot going on. The more I look at it, the more I see. Like a postmodern alien inkblot.

Thanks!Hi @juliakponsford, a modest tip of appreciation:
Wow that is great! I've never seen such a way of making art. I like it :)
I don't know if that's possible, but in case it is I would suggest that you add some elastique motion to the final "breathing" result! You know? I mean applying that principle of animation so that it "bounces" and feels more natural. Something like a curve modulating the speed of each frame.
Hehe thanks, sometimes I start off with intentions of doing one thing and it just goes in a completely different direction, lol. I wish my animation skills were up to par, I used the help of an application to do this, I have after effects but my skills are pretty limited. Learning it is on my to do list though :)
Yeah I see! that's why art is so fun :D
Okay so for after effects, I think what I was thinking about is called "ease in" and "ease out", or something like that :)
