'Back Then...' Part 3
I created this collage art as a digital version of my cut-paper artwork. This is the third version of a design I originally conceived some time ago. While working on the background the other day, I felt inspired to incorporate this cut-paper artwork into the piece.
The central figure is a girl wearing a Japanese summer kimono called a Yukata, with a fox mask resting on the back of her head. She is crouching in front of a Torii, a traditional shrine gate, seemingly reaching down to pick something up from the ground.
Then, she senses something. The 'energies.'
These energies take the form of Yokai (妖怪), supernatural entities from Japanese folklore. Among them is a Tengu (天狗), a bird-like demon that has become almost divine. Beneath the Tengu, a tricky frog stands atop a Karakasa Kozou (唐傘小僧), also known as Karakasa Obake (傘お化け). Karakasa Obake is a ghostly paper umbrella with a childlike spirit. To the girl’s right is a Chochin Obake (提灯お化け), a spectral paper lantern with a face. Finally, peeking out from behind the Torii gate is a Daruma, watching the scene unfold.
I love to create spooky artwork like this. The title, "Back Then..." reflects how this piece connects to my childhood memories. It brings back memories of exploring Japan’s many spooky yet magical places, where the past feels close, and Yokai seems just within reach. I’ve always loved Japan’s Yokai culture, which feels like a doorway to an ancient, mysterious world.

「あの頃…」パート３
切り絵のコラージュアート、デジタルバージョンを作成しました。このデザインは以前作ったもので、今回は新しく作成した背景に変えました。このピンクの背景に合うのは、この切り絵かなと閃きました。
真ん中にしゃがんでいる浴衣を着た女の子は、頭の後ろに狐のお面をかぶっています。鳥居の前で、何か落としたものを拾うためにしゃがんでいるのでしょうか。
この女の子は、突然何者かの「気配」を感じます。
どうやらその気配は妖怪たちの仕業のようです。天狗がいますね、その下には小狡いカエルが唐傘小僧の上に立っています。傘お化けといも言いますね。女の子の右側には提灯お化けもいます。それから、鳥居の後ろからこちらの様子を伺っているダルマも見えます。
わたしはこういうちょっと不気味なアートを作るのが好きです。タイトルの「あの頃…」というのは自分の幼少期に通じているものがあります。日本には昔の雰囲気や妖怪を感じさせるようなちょっとおどろおどろしい場所がたくさんありますね。古代の不思議な世界へと通じる妖怪文化が好きです。
