I am happy to have the opportunity to participate in this round of the "Splinterlands Art Contest Week 321!". The truth is that I had the idea of the illustration since yesterday, but work and time were not factors that acted in my favor. But today I said, yes or yes I must create my entry. It took me all afternoon drawing, but I really liked the result. I feel proud of how step by step I have advanced. For this occasion my inspiration was: Nerissa Tridawn.
One of the styles I like the most is the retro comic style, I love the strength of the strokes, the visual impact they bring with them. One of the things that was most complicated for me in this illustration was the mix of features and practically how little can be seen in the original art of Splinterlands. The character on the card is in profile, so imagining a frontal view was one of those cases where I doubted everything. However, I imagined him with mixed feminine and masculine features, but at the same time a harmony in both. I loved the color of his eyes, the first time I have made a character that has colors beyond the usual ones.
Inspiration, Original Splinterlands Art:
Let's quickly see Drawing process:
I started with a rough and general sketch to locate crucial parts of the character. Then I moved on to a careful outline, which I did in layers to make it easier to clean up later. I did a cleaning stage and then another one of outlining with more details and locating the contrasts.
Sketch and outline:
Base coloring:
For the coloring I placed all the outline on a single layer, unifying it. Then I placed it on the reference layer and used the paint bucket tool. This, for the solid colors. Each color on a different layer.
Shadows and lights
For the shadows, I didn't need to do much work, I just used the soft airbrush and blended it. I just added details for the suit and trident in a mix of colors to cast a golden cast. I prepared the skin and hair a bit with some darker shades for the shadows, to look more organic and less flat.
