This time, I chose to create a fan art of "Venator Kinjo" from Splinterlands, giving him a chibi-anime twist that highlights both his menacing aura and his playful proportions.
From the moment I saw Venator Kinjo, I felt inspired by his design—a perfect blend of mysticism and danger. His glowing eyes, the large prayer beads around his neck, and that ominous red symbol on his forehead immediately sparked my imagination. I was fascinated by the contrast between his monk-like attire and his lethal weapon, a dagger held with firm determination. I wanted to preserve his dark, enigmatic essence while adapting him into a cuter, stylized form. Working on this piece filled me with excitement and curiosity—it was like reinterpreting a villain into a character you'd both fear and want to draw again and again.

En esta ocasión, decidí crear un fan art de "Venator Kinjo" de Splinterlands, dándole un giro tipo chibi-anime que resalta tanto su aura amenazante como sus proporciones adorables.
Desde que vi a Venator Kinjo, me sentí inspirada por su diseño: una mezcla perfecta entre misticismo y peligro. Sus ojos brillantes, las grandes cuentas de oración que lleva al cuello y ese símbolo rojo ominoso en su frente despertaron de inmediato mi imaginación. Me fascinó el contraste entre su atuendo de monje y el arma letal que empuña con firmeza. Quise preservar su esencia oscura y enigmática, pero adaptándolo a una forma más estilizada y encantadora. Trabajar en esta pieza me llenó de emoción y curiosidad; fue como reinterpretar a un villano en alguien a quien temes... pero igual te dan ganas de volver a dibujar.
Venator Kinjo is a character from the Splinterlands universe, known for his mysterious presence and deadly precision. Cloaked in robes reminiscent of a monk, he walks the line between spiritual wisdom and silent assassination. The large red mark on his bald head signals allegiance—or perhaps a curse—while his eerie glowing eyes and concealed weapon make it clear he’s not to be taken lightly. He’s the kind of character who doesn't need to shout to be feared; his silence speaks louder than words.
Venator Kinjo es un personaje del universo de Splinterlands, conocido por su presencia enigmática y su precisión mortal. Envuelto en túnicas que recuerdan a un monje, camina por esa delgada línea entre la sabiduría espiritual y el asesinato silencioso. La gran marca roja en su cabeza calva parece señalar una alianza... o quizá una maldición, mientras que sus inquietantes ojos brillantes y su arma oculta dejan claro que no es alguien que deba subestimarse. Es de esos personajes que no necesitan alzar la voz para infundir miedo; su silencio dice mucho más.
Process / Proceso
I began this piece with a rough sketch to capture the key elements of Venator Kinjo’s design: his fierce expression, bald head, flowing robes, and of course, the menacing dagger in his hand. I wanted his pose to be confident and slightly aggressive, showing he’s ready to strike, even in his chibi form.
Empecé esta ilustración con un boceto suelto que me permitiera captar los elementos esenciales del diseño de Venator Kinjo: su expresión feroz, la cabeza calva, las túnicas amplias y, por supuesto, el amenazante puñal en su mano. Quise que su pose transmitiera confianza y un toque agresivo, demostrando que está listo para atacar incluso en su versión chibi.
Once I was satisfied with the composition, I moved on to the lineart. Here, I paid close attention to the thickness of each stroke, using clean, dynamic lines to define his facial features and clothing folds. The outline had to maintain that balance between fierce and cute, so I exaggerated some shapes—like the hands and head—for that stylized anime feel.
Una vez que estuve satisfecha con la composición, pasé al delineado. En esta etapa, presté mucha atención al grosor de cada trazo, utilizando líneas limpias y dinámicas para definir tanto los rasgos faciales como los pliegues de su vestimenta. El contorno debía conservar ese equilibrio entre lo feroz y lo adorable, así que exageré algunas formas—como las manos y la cabeza—para lograr ese toque estilizado propio del anime.
Coloring was one of my favorite parts. I used a palette faithful to the original character but added slight variations to make the tones pop more in my style. The white eyes and the red symbol on his head were key accents that I emphasized, contrasting them with muted purples and blacks in the clothing to keep the focus sharp.
El coloreado fue una de mis partes favoritas. Usé una paleta fiel al personaje original pero con pequeñas variaciones que hicieran resaltar más los tonos en mi estilo. Los ojos blancos y el símbolo rojo en su frente fueron acentos clave que quise destacar, contrastándolos con morados y negros más apagados en la ropa para mantener la atención donde debía.
Next came the shadows. I applied cell shading with strong contrasts to enhance the dramatic feel of the scene. I placed shadows around the folds of the robe, under his chin, and behind the beads to give him depth. This step really helped emphasize the character's dimensionality and expression.
Luego llegaron las sombras. Apliqué un sombreado tipo cel shading con contrastes marcados para intensificar la sensación dramática de la escena. Coloqué sombras alrededor de los pliegues de la túnica, bajo su barbilla y detrás de las cuentas del collar para darle más profundidad. Esta parte fue clave para resaltar la dimensionalidad del personaje y su expresión.
Adding highlights gave the character a magical touch. I used soft light accents on his face, hands, and the edges of his robe, simulating the effect of moonlight hitting him. The glow in his eyes and the soft sheen on the dagger helped bring him to life, almost as if he were about to move.
Agregar brillos le dio un toque mágico al personaje. Usé acentos de luz suaves en su rostro, manos y los bordes de la túnica, simulando el efecto de la luz de luna que lo ilumina. El resplandor en sus ojos y el leve brillo del puñal ayudaron a darle vida, como si estuviera a punto de moverse.
Finally, the background. I chose a night setting with a glowing full moon behind him and stylized clouds floating in the sky. The cool tones of the background contrasted perfectly with the character’s warmer highlights, creating a mystical atmosphere. The small patch of grass he stands on completed the composition without taking focus away from him.
Finalmente, el fondo. Elegí un entorno nocturno con una luna llena brillante detrás de él y nubes estilizadas flotando en el cielo. Los tonos fríos del fondo contrastan perfectamente con los brillos cálidos del personaje, creando una atmósfera mística. El pequeño parche de césped sobre el que se encuentra completó la composición sin robarle protagonismo.

Creating this fan art of Venator Kinjo was a journey of discovery and fun. Reimagining such an intense character in a chibi-anime style challenged me to maintain his essence while softening his features. I loved the process of finding that balance, and I feel proud of how it turned out. I hope this piece brings a smile to fans of Splinterlands and inspires other artists to experiment with different styles.
Crear este fan art de Venator Kinjo fue un viaje de descubrimiento y diversión. Reimaginar a un personaje tan intenso en un estilo chibi-anime me retó a mantener su esencia mientras suavizaba sus rasgos.
