My Journey Into Pencil Art

They say it's a small world after all and I only always believe this statement when it applies to me or I experienced this myself.
The world is spherical like we know and we could always meet the least person we never expected in the least expected place.
I really never imagined that coincidence that took place yesterday.
So lately I've picked an interest in pencil art, more like I am taking a little break off digital art and trying to learn the basics of drawing by starting with pencil sketches.
Cause it seemed challenging for me with pencil sketches and I still felt like I was lacking the basics.
Online tutorials weren't enough for me, I am one who even with personal learning, and online research and tutorials, I still love it more when I sit under someone and be tutored or lectured offline, off the screen.

One of the days I met and interacted with someone online, whose work I just couldn't bypass, I mean it was too good, I couldn't just ignore it. I've been seeing so many other pencil artists online and I appreciate their works too, but something about this guy's piece was captivating and I was hooked.
First I appreciated his work and made known my intentions to learn of his craft.
To my greatest surprise, he responded to me, I mean I never expected it from someone so good.
You know how snubby most of these professional artists can be or some that are near perfect, so I really wasn't betting my lucks on it but it happened and I was pretty much excited but had my doubts still.

Fast forward to when this guy decided to reach out to me on WhatsApp and when I made my interest known to him about wanting to learn the basics of pencil art, he didn't object, he listened to me and accepted to tutor me if I was so passionate about it and seeing my unwavering interest.
I couldn't believe my ears when he offered to tutor me, like if selflessness was a person.
It was just too unbelievable, for someone I don't even know nor met anywhere before, and with just a DM away, accepted to tutor me without hesitation.
We picked a date for when to start and he also asked about my schedule to know when I would be free and since I'm a student, it would mostly be in the evenings after my school lectures.
The first day to kickstart my classes with him was yesterday, which he gave me the time and location that was convenient and closer for me.
He was supposed to give me a location to go to but along the line, he had to wait for me outside school and pick me to the location which was a bit close to school.

On getting to the studio, it turned out to be owned by the same painter which I had reached out to some time last year to learn painting from😂
Now you see that coincidence, the small world statement I made earlier? I just couldn't believe it when he showed me the picture of the owner and it was the lady in question lol. That was such a bummer! But on a second note, it was funny, according to my tutor, they are close and so he wanted to make use of her studio for the tutoring session since he couldn't take me to his place being that we both are strangers to each other lol, of course because we met and Interacted online and that was our first time meeting.
He might not know this, but that was quite thoughtful of him. And I was looking forward to learning under him.

There I sat and the session began with him trying to make me feel at ease, telling me about art in general and navigating between the conversation, and then we started with searching for reference in the studio to use for the practical after he had explained what I needed to know when making pencil art, how to interpret what I see, live-reference into my drawing book or canvas.
He taught me proportion, scaling and measurements to have the accuracy in my drawing. We started with grid line drawing, he explained to me how to go about it and how to set up my Grid before I make my art.
We used two references to study this but I will only share one being that I forgot to snap the second reference.
The first thing we did was work on getting the outlines, the bigger part of the piece. He said when drawing we start with the bigger part to the tiniest details.
So that was exactly what we did in the practical aspect, there was no rush or whatever and I very much appreciated the speed range he used.
Yesterday was such a productive day for me, from school down to when I had the art classes with my tutor who was patient and gentle in guiding and explaining things to me.

I can't wait to learn all I need to learn about pencil art and gradually get better at it. I will be doing more study on my own and with the assignments and tasks I will get from my tutor too. I still have a few things to learn before we go into the shading methods and all
For now, I will be sure to do my very best because I wanted this with everything in me.
I will say it was such a great way to start my weekend.
See you guys! And Happy weekend!

PS: Photos are mine, taken at the art studio
The paintings are that of my tutor's friend
