Not too long ago we noticed some worrying changes and behaviours in Cleo. She gets that much of our attention that it's not difficult to notice even the smallest of things and what we'd noticed was anything but small. With this cat meaning so much to us we weren't about to take any chances and booked her straight into the vet. A couple days later we had our answers.
Cleo has hyperthyroidism, something the blood tests revealed quite conclusively, and left untreated will cause her demise which, of course, we won't allow to happen. It can cause retinal detachment and permanent blindness and, of course, kidney failure and death which is the way it goes if left untreated.
There were several treatments to choose from, one of which, radioactive iodine therapy, would prove quite traumatic and would require her to have stayed in the vets clinic for a couple of weeks which, for a cat like Cleo, we would not put her through. Not only does she fret when away from us, she's classed as a middle aged cat at 13 years old and it would have caused her a lot of stress. We opted for a less traumatic treatment.
Just under a week later the medicine arrived, a cream that was made by a compounding chemist and shipped to the vet, and we have been administering it each morning since, and will have to administer it for the rest of her life. It's rubbed into the inside of her ear, alternating ears each morning, and is absorbed into her system through the skin. The improvement is remarkable and she's begun to put on weight again and act normally. She'd lost half a kilogram in a very short period of time and for a cat her size that's a huge and dangerous amount of weight to lose. She's on the mend though.
We were so worried, another thing to worry about in our busy and complicated lives, but things have levelled out now and are moving in the right direction. We know we'll lose her eventually, but we will always do everything in our power to hold that off so we have time to spend with Cleo, a cat that makes us so happy.

Blummin science and medicine, sometimes it's awesome! Hope she keeps on the up and up!
It's difficult not being able to talk to the animal and say, what's wrong, tell me what hurts, but the vets do a good job and we have a really good one. We're confident she'll keep responding well to the medication and will add to it with loads of cuddles.
Yeah, it's really hard at you just would love to talk to them but have to do it with cuddles and love. We have had some good vets over the last few years too. It really makes a difference
It is good to hear you were able to figure out what was wrong and she seems to be improving. The application doesn't seem too bad, and it could just be additional cuddles and petting for her. I hope she continues to get better.
We hope so too and think she's going quite well so far - She gave us a scare though.
Awhhh🥺,I feel sorry for cleo.I hope she will live more that can make good memories with her parents.
Animals never failed to comfort us🥰
She'll live more for sure, I take good care of her.
Just reading was hard for me. Oh Cleo....we will do anything for our pets...life is easier with then in it. But I believe that with proper care, she will live a long time! With you taking care of her, definitely ;)
She's a really nice little cat and is a big part of my world so losing her wasn't an option although it'll happen at some point. She seems to be responding well and that's made me very happy. She gets extra hugs and cuddles which means it's almost all I do all day because she used t longer a lot anyway!
So you are a cuddling master ;) I wish I could have a cat again, but my sweet dog isn't a fan of them. I grew up with cats. My cat Snuppy lived to be about 16 and was my best friend for most of my childhood. She was such a joy, except when she brought mice into my room! Your cat is a fighter, I wish her all the best!
I'm the best hugger/cuddler in the world, it's widely known.
Some dogs don't get along with cats, I know. It's a pity for you as you seem to love cats. Snuppy, what a good name! I lost my best friend (Merlin) in 2020 after 22 years of having him with me. I loved him so much and was devastated. He loved Cleo also and she loved him, they were inseparable. Damn I miss Merlin. I took this the day he was put to sleep...it broke my heart. He had kidney failure, had gone blind and...well, I'd rather not go into it I guess.
Aww, poor Cleo...and poor kitty parents too! I know how upsetting it is for the littles to be ill, especially since they can't actually tell us what's wrong. Luckily Cleo's folks got her in to see the vet in good time. I hadn't heard about that method of medicine administration but it really does sound less traumatizing, plus being inside the ear she can't lick it off. Happy to hear she is improving rapidly. She's a beauty, just sitting there showing off those murder mittens lol
She's a rascal but in a good way and her cuddles are the best. We noticed her change in routine and the weightloss and instantly knew something was up, there was some blood vomiting also which I omitted from the post. She seems to be improving nicely, although she's not really into the medicine in the the ear but is getting used to it.
That is good your fur buddy is on the mend. I get it about how much she means to you. Hell, I like my dog Bailey more than most people.
I'm the same, Cleo is more engaging than most people I know and I'd rather be with her than them...have to go out tonight and am already thinking I'd rather stay in. Lol..
That’s nasty but glad there is a solution. We’ve a cat, might have shared photos of her here in the past. I’m now more of a cat person than I ever was.
Cats have a way of making a person like them I think. Maybe you should show some photos of your can sometime.
I think you’re right. Sure I’ll post some posts.
Hi Galen, I hope Cleo recovers very soon. Best regards
Thanks, she's going well so far so is on the right track.
Have a good weekend.
I'm glad to hear what you tell me about Cleo.
Happy weekend.
Happy weekend to you also.
See you soon, 👋
I know she will be lovingly cared for and will recover. My regards @galenkp. Bonito fin de semana.🤗
She's always well cared for and the focus of our attention who his why we noticed something was wrong early on I suppose. She's improving and almost back to her former self now so we're really happy.
Have a nice weekend.
This is news and updates I was looking forward to reading, I knew you were having health problems and I know how worried you must be. I know because the same thing happens to me when one of mine gets sick... they are already 11 and a half years old.
I'm so glad you have started treatment and are getting better. That is great news.
A big hug for Cleo!🤗
She is back to her former self and responding well to the medication and my hugs. She gets carried around a lot more, cuddled and kissed, and that's saying a lot because those things happens a lot anyway!
We're pleased with how she's coming along.
That makes me very happy, I've been there and I know how it feels. Giving lots of love is fundamental!
I am so glad about this... :) yes! It's great news to know that you guys are calmer already, and Cleo is feeling better.
It's taken a little stress away which is a good thing. I lead a feather busy and stressful life and this almost tipped me over the edge. Cleo is such a huge part of my life and the thought of her dying, which was where this was headed, topped the stress level to overflowing.
We're glad she's on the mend.
Lump in my throat reading this out loud to Kelly.
So glad we are all good for now. ❤️🐈❤️
photo of co-pilot #2 "Lil' Guy" watching tv with me while out on the road last week
It was a terrible time which I know you understand all too well. We're glad she responded to the medication as we were reluctant to subject her to the other one considering the type of cat she is. They say that radioactive isotope therapy is terrible on them.
Thanks for commenting.
Another update post soon with photos please. Love us some Cleo pics.
She's doing pretty well actually, responding to the medication and all. She had one bad day which worried us but the vet said it's normal and will occur now and then. I'll do a post eventually.
❤️
I'm glad they acted promptly and took Cleo to the vet to find out about the hyperthyroidism in time. You are absolutely right, we have to take advantage of the time that our pets give us and make it as pleasant as possible for them and for us. ❤️
Let's become a large part of a person's life and we'll do anything for ours no matter the cost. Of course, we'd not want them to live in pain and that's where difficult decisions need to be made, but in Cleopatra's case she's responded well and is going much better thankfully.
I completely understand your concern for your kitty. I am exactly the same way with my dogs. It's great to hear that Cleo is responding well to the treatment! I hope she gets better soon
Our pets come to mean so much to us don't they?
Sure! My eldest has definitely been through some rough times health-wise. I've spent a good amount of money on her, but I'll do whatever it takes to keep her well
The money becomes irrelevant when compared to their wellbeing doesn't it?
I'm glad you were able to find a solution that is relatively painless for your cat. Towards the end of Jovi's life we were rotating between a whole bunch of different meds and although she still had a good quality of life, it had to be hard on her internally.
If they could talk I think they'd tell us some terrible stories. Cats are rather stoic and don't show their pain or discomfort most often, but they must feel it.
Brother, Cleo is beautiful and what a nice picture you have taken.... Pets are part of the family, it is inevitable to notice when something is wrong with them. It always saddens me when animals get sick too, but Cleo is blessed to have a family that loves him, so all of us who read your post know he will be fine. I hope everything goes well at home bro!...
She gets the royal treatment in this household, she's the central point of my household and we love her very much. Having her on the mend and behaving like normal is a huge relief.
So happy to hear that Cleo is receiving the treatment she needs. It's not easy when our furry friends become unwell, they are such wonderful parts of our family. xx
She's going well and seems to have responded to the medication as intended. We're relieved and thankful.
I like cats. I hope I'll be able to have one in the near future. Vets are indeed amazing. Looking forward to a sick free Cleo. What a cutie.
She's cute indeed, maybe you'll get a cat one day and find out how. Strong that bond can be.
I hope so. I really love cats. I even adopted a street cat before but it went missing. I think it went home.

Cleo is very cute, I hope she is always in good condition. She looks very healthy, I don't know what kind of illness Cleo has but things will get better.
I also have a cat at home, we take good care of him, lately he was injured because of a fight with the neighbor's cat, he will also recover soon.
This post explains it. Maybe take a read huh?
