Ticking off

Today I can officially announce that I've reached the end of another working year. Tomorrow is a paid work day but it's the end of year celebration event to mark the closing out of the year so not really a "work day" per se.

We have a breakfast, some awards and a very cool video montage of this year's greatest hits has been made which I'm told is fucken hilarious...it's snippets of footage of all the dumb or funny things the organisation's personnel have done over the year; not to be missed I'm told. There'll be awards at breakfast, serious and funny/joke ones, speeches and then we're all being transported to a "secret location" for the rest of the day to spend a fuck load of the organisations revenue.

There's various elements within the organisation and mine opted not to do a secret Santa gift exchange between us because...well, we're not a bunch of fucken babies who need gifts. I was happy with that but, as often happens some people bring gifts and hand them out; it's nice to give stuff to others right?

I don't really enjoy receiving gifts though, I feel awkward about it. I'm not ungrateful, exactly the opposite in fact, but I always feel awkward receiving gifts and today was no different.

I received two bottles of Shiraz, a bottle of (legit) gin, a case of low sugar/carbohydrate beer, a bottle of merlot, one bottle of Scotch whisky...there's an alcoholic theme here right? I also got a cool Yeti mug (totally legit), a few Cuban cigars, a coffee cup that says, "fuck nugget" on it (something I say a lot), a .308 rifle round with my name engraved on it (there's a back story to that gift) and some smart-ass got me some men's facial moisturiser - there's also a back story to that one - which means I'll go back to work next year looking twenty years younger.

Each time, a hand shake occurred and some genuine gratitude was shown...I issued a few hugs and kisses to the female personnel and there was a lot of genuine good feelings all round...but it all felt so awkward because receiving gifts feels odd to me.

As part of the leadership team, I've been partly responsible for my operators receiving some cool stuff (tailored to each of their personal likes) and that felt good - they deserve it - and the end of year day/event paid for by the organisation will be a pretty amazing day for all, a good way to round out the year; one in which the organisation hit some incredible milestones (and targets) *because of the personnel that operates there.

I've had a challenging but rewarding working year overall with a massive shift, some may call it a course correction, in the middle of it which has worked out really well. My core skills are being well-utilised by a legit organisation who values what I do and I've been able to find ways to contribute to and improve and develop their already great systems, processes and operations towards greater efficiency, effectiveness and revenue. A good year? Yes, a very good working year. I'm ready for tomorrow's day-long end of year festivities and to ticking off my working year.

Looking back on your own working year, whether you work for yourself or as an employee, would you say your year has been productive? Have you made a positive difference, helped your team progress personally and professionally, driven additional revenue into the coffers or have you simply had an enjoyable working year? Feel free to comment and, of course, if you've had a shit working year you can talk about that also.

Congratulations on another successful year.

I would say that my year was productive as well. I reached my yearly goal of HP(10k) and did it at beginning of december so in the end I will be surpassing that goal. I made a lot of art this year. For the first time sold a commissioned art piece. Now I bought a drawing tablet so I am about to go on a new adventure of digital art...We finally listened to our favorite neighbor's advice and started using water from city supplies. That should save us both money and some nerves. Also my favorite basketball team is currently one of the best in euroleague... so all in all it was a good year.

It sounds like you've ticked off a few wins this year and have set yourself up for an event better 2025 no hope that drawing tablet works out for you and you get to explore your creativity in new ways with it.

What a joy to read you, after a year full of efforts and sacrifices that someone has a positive balance is gratifying and encouraging.
Enjoy the gifts, ultimately people give them with the thought that the person is worth it, and whether you consume them or not they were given to you with sympathy and to acknowledge that you are very welcome to that work team...it would seem that you are a shy man but you are not.

My state work year has nothing to do with yours, right now I'm tearing heads off and whoever doesn't like it should leave, otherwise the one leaving is me...😂..., it's a business where the outcome has to be win or win, otherwise it's not worth my time.....
My particular work is stopped for the end of the year, but ready to be reactivated at any time, and that only depends on me.

Enjoy these last days of the end of the year, I am sure that 2025 will be much better for all of you.

I put a lot into the things I do because I've learned that effort brings reward and it's in my nature to seek reward for effort rather than simply expect reward.

I'm fortunate to have a good team around me at my organisation, in general and my immediate team, and that the entire organisation has an ethos based around discipline and a solid work-rate. I am also fortunate to be liked and respected which is something earned...they all have my respect in return. It's a good place to work.

I hope your year looks like you wanted it to look from the start and that you've got some great plans for 2025.

I wish I was lucky enough right now to work with people of your nature, although our system doesn't help either, but I need to surround myself with people who have a lot of discipline, and enough motivation to succeed, and who don't care about the obstacles, they just have to have the will.
Something very similar to what you have Galenkp, I need what you describe.

Let's go for it! but always with a plan B and another C if necessary.

I wish you the same, many successes in the coming 2025.

It's really important who we surround ourselves with although in a work environment it's difficult to be selective.

So many people absorb the influences of social media people, often bikini-clad fake-boobed girls pushing one product or another on Instagram and I don't think that's altogether healthy or productive. people are made to feel inadequate through marketing to keep them spending in pursuit of feelings of acceptance, validation or relevance but those things can only come from within. Sad really.

I work hard to find my own relevance, to surround myself with like-minded people and those who value me for who I am and with all my flaws and fallibilities.

Anyway, keep pushing, you'll get closer to where you want to be that way.

I understand what you are saying, and I fight even against those who try to make me quit before I even start...but I can't let myself be defeated yet....above all, because I will only stay with the people who deserve it.
If it doesn't work out it will be one more experience I'll take with me.
Thanks Galenkp for making me understand some good things.

Negative people should be shunned, no matter who they are.

Yay for a good working year and successful course correction :D J just finished up today as well.

Work year at the job has generally been productive and pretty great, project work not so much as per usual -_- but that always happens.

driven additional revenue into the coffers

I initially read this as "driven additional revenue into coffee" and was like damn how hard are you guys working XD Can you tell I'm tired and need more coffee x_x

Loads of coffee gets drunk, but only milk and sugar goes into it, they put the revenue elsewhere. 😃

Man I look back on those days of working for a corporation with mixed feelings. As a sales guy, the team and the money were awesome. On the other hand, this time of year is straight fucked as I was chasing quarter or year end dollars out of people trying to go away on vacation or miss my number and risk getting fired. Not great.

Now, I own my own corporation which comes with benefits and drawbacks. All in all it was a year of growth and progress which now is harder to have snatched from me unless I fire myself.

So glad to hear you are in a good spot my friend. When leaders are there, those on the team reap the benefits so congrats on a great year, enjoy the downtime and here’s to an even better 2025.

Could you imagine how you'd feel if you fired yourself just before Christmas?! I'd say that's be grounds for unfair dismissal and you'd have to use yourself...that'd cause some complications!😂

The first half of this year was super tough, my work was hectic, complicated and stressful and the second half not as bad as that so it balanced out; I had to make a change though, and even though I'm doing similar things it's remarkable how different the last half of the year has been in a positive way. I can't complain.

All the best for your end of year and the season, and here's to a good 2025.

Among the gifts a lot of alcohol but I remember you said you don't drink. You also have Cuban cigars, nice gift, do not forget to try them, I know you will appreciate it, and for me it will be a pride to know that you liked them.
Enjoy the party and have a few laughs for sure it will be a great meeting between mates.
Greetings 😅😘.

Yeah, I don't drink alcohol much at all, sometimes I do though. Most of what I was given will be given to others otherwise it'll sit at home unused.

I'm also not a smoker but the cigars are a symbolic thing, something that happens on certain occasions and it's always Cuban cigars due to their quality. Those I was given will top up my supply for the following year.

Good to read that you had such a great year and that your colleagues appreciate you. Those are a lot of gifts! Good ones, too. And I totally get you 'feeling awkward receiving gifts'. Same here. Getting compliments - same. I'd like to think that I'm getting better at it but it's definitely a work in progress.

My year, work year? Simply judging by my many recurring absences here on Hive I'm sure it doesn't come as a surprise that my year has been pretty much - not great. From a work view, I have done what needed to be done and more but that exhausted me personally, like never before. On top of it, the year ended on a low note at work, too, which was a real downer this week.

Thankfully, I too had my last working day of the year yesterday. Well, kind of, I'll have to do something on Monday that I just couldn't get done yesterday (missing input from overseas - time difference) but then I hope to be off for real until 1/2. I need the break and intend to do a ton of - nothing. LOL. Actually, more likely, painting. We'll see. And time in front of the fire place and on the couch. Right now I'm looking at snow outside, first one this year.

Yeah, not a particularly easy yeah but one in which decisions were made and acted upon and it's worked out ok despite being super complicated.

It's a shame to hear your year has been not so great and I certainly understand that exhausted feeling. Also, ending the year on a low note is never nice. I'm sorry for that.

I hope you and your hubs have something planned out for 2025 and that it's a better year for you, and everyone to be honest.

Happy holidays, G. It's very noticeable how cheerful you are, and of course you have reason to be. You've worked hard and with results. Drink in moderation of all that stuff you've been gifted. Congratulations to you. 🌞

What a beautiful sea!

I've had an up and down year with the first half of it being incredibly stressful and complicated; after mid-year reset and pivot the year was saved overall and now, at the end, I can't complain about how it all went. So, I'm content.

Drink is moderation is what I always do...the last time I was even close to being drunk was 25 years ago so there's little risk of that happening. Sometimes I think I'm too responsible but I can't help it and besides I'm one of those who doesn't like losing control of myself and surroundings so moderate drinking is for sure the plan.

The sea...you mean the painting? That hangs in my house...my dad painted it.

I know, well, you've said it all along that you drink in moderation. And as for the sea, of course I know it's a painting and now it's doubly beautiful 😉.

Cheers!

I'll have two, maybe three alcoholic drinks over the course of the day which probably counts as moderate drinking. I can speak for one of the others though, I'm sure they'll make up for what I don't drink.

Three is good. Just celebrate your contentment. I am very happy for you. I'd join you for a drink, although I'd really prefer a nice creamy ice cream and biscuits. 🤤

Well, you'd be welcome to join if you were here of course. We could drink in moderation together.

🤭💯😂

My congratulations on those 20 years of age less. My congratulations for the achievements of this year and for those of next year. About my year, it has been quite good, it is the year that has opened the doors for me to supervise the internships of students of the master's degree in psychology. I love this challenge of transmitting what I have learned to young people, I will start in March 2025.

Happy holidays.

I know, I'll be 12 years old again! 😋

It sounds like you've had a rewarding and fulfilling year and I think that's about all one can ask for from a working year. Well done.

Hoka Gajen, I'm sorry to reply so late, but I'm less green every day, and yesterday I was at my workplace's Christmas dinner and got home late.

Happy end of the week

My year has definitely been productive. It's a lot of the behind the scenes stuff that people don't usually see though. Which honestly is fine with me because I don't need a lot of recognition anyway. I do kind of miss working for the private sector where there weren't so many restrictions and parties and bonuses were the norm. We get none of that here in the public sector due to regulations and all that jazz. Enjoy your time off!

I, and those I work with, don't seek recognition either but it's always welcome so the organisation ensure it happens when due. They're very generous throughout the year and in pay cycles of course, and today will be no different to any of the other events; lavish, enjoyable and we'll thought out. It'll be a nice way to round out the year.

It sounds like a perfect end to the year!

My year has been much, much, much better than last year and I am looking forward to the year to come. I have helped a lot those who work with me and I have had much more progress and success, I am very happy for what I have achieved and very excited for what is to come! It has been a very good year, hard work but I can see the fruits!
I'm glad you will finish the year of work like this and you can have a well deserved rest!

Well, at least two of us had good years and let's hope 2025 is even better.

It will be, I have no doubt! Have a great day!

😉

Great gifts! Pour me some gin :)

I know right? All that alcohol and I'm not even that much of a drinker! 🙈

This year was not too successful for me at work. Without any project to mark it, with administration challenges due to the change in the mobile operator's billing system, which caused me to have a few months of manual administration hell, with a discussion about increasing the salary for my team, challenges with long deliveries of equipment that needed to be installed...

Only since September, the situation has improved a little.
It started to go back to normal, so it will improve the impression in the next few days.

I am looking forward to sharing gifts this time. the name tag I pulled made me happy.
I bought a great book for a colleague who has just started to do amateur photography.

I am glad that I have drawn someone to whom I can buy a meaningful gift.

That looks like a decent book and one that person would like. Well done.

Hopefully 2025 is better for you so you'll be able to tick it off with more enthusiasm this time next year.
