Several months ago I saw for the second time the animated adaptation of a manga called Gyo created by the great mangaka and master of horror Junji Ito.
Rememoraba entonces esos momentos tan escalofriantes cuando los peces (incluyendo a los siempre temibles tiburones) y una amplia variedad de animales marinos emergían en tropel hacia la costa, prestos a recorrer a toda velocidad la ciudad de Tokio Ecchi cual cucarachas huyendo despavoridas en temporada de limpieza.
I was reminded of those chilling moments when fish (including the ever-feared sharks) and a wide variety of marine animals swarmed ashore, ready to scurry through the city of Tokyo Ecchi like fleeing cockroaches in clean-up season.
Los peces que caminan: ¿realidad o ficción?
Además, cada vez que podía pausaba alguna escena para estudiar detenidamente alguno de los acontecimientos, y los comparaba con los plasmados a lo largo de las páginas del manga, llegando de este modo a la conclusión de que era mejor leer la obra impresa que ver la adaptación en animé (la cual está muy bien hecha por cierto).
Pero, al mismo tiempo no dejaba de pensar en lo horrible que me resultaba la idea de ver peces con patas saliendo del agua ante la mirada atónita de las personas...
The walking fish: fact or fiction?
In addition, whenever I could, I would pause a scene to carefully study some of the events and compare them with those depicted in the pages of the manga, thus coming to the conclusion that it was better to read the printed work than to watch the anime adaptation (which is very well done, by the way).
But, at the same time, I kept thinking about how horrible I found the idea of seeing fish with legs coming out of the water before the astonished gaze of the people?
Más allá de la fuente de inspiración utilizada por el señor Ito a la hora de dar vida a su extraña obra de terror, claramente de índole militarista y sazonada con argumentos típicos de la ciencia ficción, recordé que existe la teoría sobre unos seres de tipo anfibio, de los que se presume fueron los antepasados de los reptiles y mamíferos terrestres primigenios que más tarde colonizarían la tierra.
Beyond the source of inspiration used by Mr. Ito to give life to his strange work of horror, clearly of a militaristic nature and seasoned with typical science fiction arguments, I remembered that there is a theory about amphibian-like beings, presumed to be the ancestors of the primitive reptiles and terrestrial mammals that would later colonize the earth.
El eslabón perdido
Curiosamente, hasta donde sé todavía no se ha encontrado evidencia alguna o fósiles que confirmen la existencia de esos particulares anfibios, muy similares a peces con patas, lo cierto es que el hecho de que no hayamos encontrado nada no significa que debamos considerar que nunca llegaron a existir.
The missing link
Curiously, as far as I know, no evidence or fossils have yet been found to confirm the existence of these particular amphibians, very similar to fish with legs, but the fact that we have not found anything does not mean that we should consider that they never existed.
Al parecer esas enigmáticas criaturas son lo que se conoce como una forma de vida hipotética. Es altamente probable que hayan existido a pesar de la inexistencia de pruebas físicas.
Apparently these enigmatic creatures are what is known as a hypothetical life form. It is highly probable that they existed despite the lack of physical evidence.
No obstante, estuve pensando durante varios días sobre lo anterior, y en la posibilidad de que algunos de ellos o tal vez una especie derivada haya logrado sobrevivir hasta nuestros días, tal y como sucedió con el enigmático pez Celacanto...
However, I was thinking for several days about the above, and about the possibility that some of them or perhaps a derived species has managed to survive until today, as happened with the enigmatic Coelacanth fish...

Ahora bien, se imaginarán mi sorpresa cuando descubrí, tras una ardua investigación en diversos medios, que décadas atrás se dieron no uno, sino dos posibles avistamientos de peces caminantes en territorio británico.
The fish that walked on the beach in 1953
Now, you can imagine my surprise when I discovered, after an arduous investigation in various media, that decades ago there were not one, but two possible sightings of walking fish in British territory.
Ambos casos se basan en la declaración de testigos presenciales. Pero, lo más interesante de todo el asunto, es que parece haber quedado evidencia física que les de credibilidad, concretamente una supuesta serie de huellas en la arena y hasta un cadáver.
Esto último es lo que sirvió como base para el nacimiento de la leyenda de El Monstruo de Canvey Island.
Both cases are based on eyewitness testimony. But, most interestingly of all, there seems to be physical evidence left behind to give them credibility, namely an alleged series of footprints in the sand and even a corpse.
The latter is what served as the basis for the birth of the legend of the Canvey Island Monster.
Se dice que el primer avistamiento tuvo lugar en un día no determinado del mes de noviembre del año 1953, cuando los pobladores de Canvey Island se toparon con algo inusual en la playa.
Según los testigos, se trataba de una criatura muy extraña que presuntamente habría salido del mar caminando y, que por alguna razón tan desconocida como su propia aparición, cayó muerta sobre la arena.
The first sighting is said to have taken place on an unspecified day in November 1953, when the inhabitants of Canvey Island came across something unusual on the beach.
According to witnesses, it was a very strange creature that allegedly came out of the sea walking and, for some reason as unknown as its own appearance, fell dead on the sand.
El hecho parece haber tenido lugar durante la noche, principalmente porque la criatura fue avistada muerta de día en una zona donde la gente suele pasear y dedicarse a ciertas actividades desde muy temprano.
The event appears to have taken place during the night, mainly because the creature was sighted dead during the day in an area where people usually stroll and engage in certain activities very early in the morning.
Las características del monstruo
El relato de los testigos afirma que la susodicha medía alrededor de unos 76cm y que su piel era gruesa y muy parecida a la de los seres humanos o la de los cerdos.
Además, dijeron que esta tenía un color bastante particular, algo así como un marrón de tinte rojizo, rematado a su vez con unos ojos saltones como los de un sapo y unas agallas. Esto último indicaba que claramente se trataba de un pez.
The characteristics of the monster
Witness says that the monster was about 76 cm tall and that its skin was thick and very similar to that of humans or pigs.
In addition, they said that it had a rather particular color, something like a reddish-brown tinge, topped off with bulging eyes like those of a toad and gills. The latter indicated that it was clearly a fish.
Sin embargo, lo que más aterrorizo a aquellas personas fue que la criatura tenía un par de extremidades bien formadas y ubicadas en su parte trasera...
However, what terrified those people the most was that the creature had a pair of well-shaped limbs located on its back...
Llegados a este punto creo que es importante destacar que la gente que vive en la costa por lo general está acostumbrada a ver animales marinos. Es muy normal para ellos y no causa mayor impresión ver algún pez sacado del agua por pescadores.
At this point I think it is important to point out that people who live on the coast are generally accustomed to seeing marine animals. It is very normal for them and it does not cause much of an impression to see some fish taken out of the water by fishermen.
Pero en este caso se trataba de algo muy distinto. Ninguno de los habitantes de Canvey Island había visto, y menos aún oído, historias de antepasados o amigos cercanos relacionados con la existencia de peces con patas que salieran a dar un paseo correteando en la superficie.
But in this case it was something quite different. None of the Canvey Islanders had ever seen, let alone heard, stories of ancestors or close friends relating to the existence of fish with legs that went for a stroll scampering on the surface.
También se llegó a decir que las patas del engendro abisal en cuestión no eran unos simples apéndices accidentales, la cual era una las múltiples excusas esgrimidas por los escépticos.
Esto al parecer quedaría confirmado por el hecho de que ambas extremidades poseían cinco dedos claramente visibles, y más aún porque era obvia su adaptación para el desplazamiento en tierra.
Pero lo más raro era que dichas patas tuviesen la forma de una herradura…
It was also said that the legs of the abyssal creature in question were not merely accidental appendages, which was one of the many excuses put forward by skeptics.
This would seem to be confirmed by the fact that both limbs had five clearly visible toes, and even more so because it was obvious that they were adapted for movement on land.
But the strangest thing was that these legs had the shape of a horseshoe...
La investigación del misterio

Debido a esta y sus otras desconcertantes características los pobladores de la isla comenzaron a inquietarse bastante. Los rumores iban y venían, hasta que el asunto comenzó a preocupar a las autoridades quienes finalmente ordenaron se llevara a cabo un estudio por parte de expertos.
Mystery research
Because of this and its other disconcerting characteristics, the inhabitants of the island began to get quite worried. Rumors came and went, until the matter began to worry the authorities who finally ordered a study to be carried out by experts.
Así fue como el ahora llamado Monstruo de Canvey Island llegó a ser escrutado de manera superficial por un grupo de zoólogos, quienes se limitaron a declarar luego que no había nada de raro en la criatura, que se trataba de un pez normal y que no era una amenaza para nadie.
Thus it was that the now called the Canvey Island Monster came to be superficially scrutinized by a group of zoologists, who simply declared afterwards that there was nothing unusual about the creature, that it was a normal fish and that it was not a threat to anyone.
Estas afirmaciones influyeron casi de inmediato en la opinión de las autoridades, quienes a la larga se limitaron a cremar el cadáver del supuesto monstruo marino con el fin de dar punto final a la historia.
These claims almost immediately swayed the opinion of the authorities, who eventually confined themselves to cremating the corpse of the alleged sea monster in order to put an end to the story.
A partir de entonces la cosa quedó así, solo como un suceso sin demasiada importancia, y poco a poco la gente fue olvidándose de eso.
Aunque si bien es cierto que los testigos presenciales aún conservaron en su memoria la extraña y aterradora imagen de la criatura.
From then on, the thing remained as such, just as an event without too much importance, and little by little people forgot about it.
Although it is true that the eyewitnesses still kept in their memory the strange and terrifying image of the creature.

Sin embargo, al año siguiente se volvió a presentar una situación irregular en las playas de Canvey Island. Esto luego de que se confirmara la presencia de otro cadáver de un pez con patas, muy similar al anterior.
The other fish that came out of the sea walking in 1954
However, the following year an irregular situation occurred again on the beaches of Canvey Island. This after the presence of another carcass of a fish with legs, very similar to the previous one, was confirmed.
Una vez más se supone que este otro hecho curioso tuvo lugar en un día indeterminado del mes de agosto, siendo descrito como demasiado parecido al pez bípedo encontrado en las costas de la isla un año antes, con la única diferencia de que su longitud era mucho mayor: aproximadamente unos 120 cm de largo y un peso de unos 11.3 kg.
Once again this other curious event is supposed to have taken place on an undetermined day in August, being described as too similar to the bipedal fish found off the coast of the island a year earlier, with the only difference being that its length was much greater: approximately 120 cm long and weighing about 11.3 kg.
Otra particularidad de este segundo espécimen consistía en que se encontraba en mejor estado, lo que permitió hacerle un estudio más riguroso.
Pero, en esta oportunidad las autoridades decidieron no emitir ningún tipo de informe al respecto, y al mismo tiempo tampoco hicieron de conocimiento público los resultados de las investigaciones científicas.
Para rematar nunca se dijo a donde fue a parar el cadáver del pez…
Another peculiarity of this second specimen was that it was in better condition, which allowed for a more rigorous study.
However, this time the authorities decided not to issue any kind of report on the matter, and at the same time they did not make public the results of the scientific investigations.
To top it all off, they never said where the fish carcass ended up...

Esta actitud de las autoridades contribuyó a que surgieran diversos rumores sobre una conspiración destinada a ocultar la verdad sobre el Monstruo de Canvey, algo que también añadió un toque se misterio adicional a esta leyenda.
The alleged conspiracy and possible explanations of the creature's origin
This attitude of the authorities contributed to the emergence of several rumors about a conspiracy to hide the truth about the Canvey Monster, something that also added an additional touch of mystery to this legend.
Con el paso del tiempo muchos fueron los que se aventuraron a decir que ambos cadáveres en realidad correspondían a peces ya clasificados por la ciencia, tales como el Rape o los simpáticos Pejesapos, unos peces muy parecidos a los especímenes encontrados en las playas de Canvey, los cuales poseen unos apéndices o aletas en forma de patas con los que se desplazan sobre la arena subacuática.
With the passage of time, many were those who ventured to say that both corpses actually corresponded to fish already classified by science, such as the Anglerfish or the friendly Pejesapos, fish very similar to the specimens found on the beaches of Canvey, which have appendages or fins in the form of legs with which they move on the underwater sand.
Esta clase de explicaciones parecían ser bastante aceptables y tranquilizadoras. Desde entonces mucha gente se apoyó en ellas para darle sentido a la apariencia del monstruo, pero por desgracia un nuevo acontecimiento terminaría por seguir avivando la llama del misterio.
These kinds of explanations seemed to be quite acceptable and reassuring. Since then many people have relied on them to make sense of the monster's appearance, but unfortunately a new event would end up further fanning the flame of mystery.
¿Podrían estar ocultando la verdad?
Corría el año 1999 y el periodista Nicholas Warren se disponía a efectuar una investigación a fondo sobre las criaturas de Canvey Island, razón por la cual, decidió echar un vistazo a los registros oficiales sobre el caso.
Viajó a Plymouth y se puso en contacto con el laboratorio de la Asociación de Biología Marina, sin embargo allá no encontró absolutamente nada que indicara que las criaturas halladas en Canvey Island habían sido identificadas.
Lo mismo ocurrió al dirigirse hasta la sede de la Autoridad Nacional de Ríos…
Could they be hiding the truth?
It was 1999 and journalist Nicholas Warren was about to conduct an in-depth investigation into the Canvey Island creatures, so he decided to take a look at the official records on the case.
He traveled to Plymouth and contacted the Marine Biological Association laboratory, but found absolutely nothing to indicate that the creatures found on Canvey Island had been identified.
The same thing happened when he went to the headquarters of the National Rivers Authority...
A pesar de ello, decidió entrevistar a varios pobladores del sector, pero se encontró con que estos ya habían abrazado la tesis del rape. Esto hizo que la investigación se estancara y diera más fuerza a la versión oficial.
In spite of this, he decided to interview several inhabitants of the sector, but found that they had already embraced the rape thesis. This caused the investigation to stagnate and gave more strength to the official version.
La leyenda continua

Al día de hoy no se ha tenido noticia de la aparición de otros peces con patas en las playas de Canvey Island, y más nada se supo del por qué no se había archivado información sobre las criaturas encontradas allá hace ya varias decadas.
Sea lo que sea que hayan sido, nada puede ocultar el hecho de que los mares del mundo encierran misterios desconocidos… peces de apariencias extrañas y tal vez, solo tal vez, haya en algún lugar de las profundidades un pez bípedo esperando el momento de darse un paseíto por las encantadoras playas de Canvey Island.
The Legend Continues
To this day there has been no news of the appearance of other legged fish on the beaches of Canvey Island, and nothing has been learned as to why no information has been filed on the creatures found there several decades ago.
Whatever they may have been, nothing can hide the fact that the world's seas hold unknown mysteries... strange looking fish and maybe, just maybe, somewhere in the depths there is a bipedal fish just waiting for a stroll along the enchanting beaches of Canvey Island.
