I used to have ringworm on my head when I was a kid and I contacted it from my friends who have it, this didn't ruin our friendship, our parents help us took care of it lol.
As for your own childhood friends, probably you were the only one that sees them as friend, they didn't see you as one and that hurt when our friends make jest of us.
