Hi my friends, I wish you a good and healthy day full of happiness and joy! and look what I have bring for you today!
A great poem by Omar Khayyam (the famous Persian poet and thinker, wrote many poems about life, time, and the shortness of our existence) Today I want to share with you one of his well known poems, though The poem itself does not have a specific name because it is part of Omar Khayyam’s collection of Rubaiyat so we can say it is a Rubai.
A Statue of Khayyam in Iran:
But I should inform you that when you are translating a poem from its native language to another language everything just changes and it might not be as good as its Persian version, but let's just read It with its English translate too.
خیام، اگر ز باده مستی، خوش باش
با ماهرخی اگر نشستی، خوش باش
چون عاقبتِ کارِ جهان نیستی است
انگار که نیستی، چو هستی، خوش باش
Khayyam, if you are drunk with wine, enjoy it.
If you sit with a moon-faced beauty, enjoy it.
Since the end of the world is nothingness,
Pretend you are not—and while you are, enjoy it.
At first look, it seems like Khayyam is just saying to drink wine and have fun, but the meaning is much deeper.
Life is Short, So Enjoy the Moment
In this poem, Khayyam tells us that everything in life is temporary. He talks about wine and a beautiful person, but they are symbols. Wine is not only about drinking, it means forgetting problems and feeling free. The "moon-faced beauty" is not only about love, it is about beauty and happiness that come and go like the moon. He says we should enjoy these moments before they disappear. What Happens After Death?
The most interesting part of this poem is the last two lines. He says the end of everything is "nothingness" (* نیستی *). Many people believe in life after death, but Khayyam is not sure. Instead of worrying about what happens after we die, he gives another idea, act like you are already nothing. This is a very deep thought. It means, don’t worry too much about things that don’t last. If you act like you are nothing, then you are free to enjoy life without fear.Is This Poem About Having Fun or Something More?
Some people think Khayyam's poems are just about drinking and happiness, but it is not so simple. He is not saying to waste life on partying. He is telling us to be aware that life is short and we should not spend too much time thinking about things we cannot change. His message is similar to modern ideas of "living in the present" and even some parts of Buddhism and existential philosophy.
For me, the meaning of the poem makes things feel more realistic than what we see. The things we believe and perceive can stop us from understanding the true nature of life. Though we should be responsible and take care of our daily tasks, we must not let them become more important than life itself. The joy and happiness we give and receive are truly important.
I hope you will feel good after reading this poem and my analysis about it.
I wish you the best, my friends!
