If I have learned anything in my long life, it is this: in love we discover who we want to be; in war we discover who we are.

The Reflection / La Reflexión
I think of Kristin Hannah's words in The Nightingale when I reflect on the past: "In love we find out who we want to be; in war we find out who we are". This phrase makes me reflect on humanity. We often forget that armed conflicts are the fruit of our own humanity; confrontations born of the pursuit of our own interests over those of others; disagreements that lead us to see more and more differences and antagonisms between us.
Pienso en las palabras de Kristin Hannah en El Ruiseñor cuando reflexiono sobre el pasado: "En el amor descubrimos quiénes queremos ser; en la guerra descubrimos quiénes somos". Esta frase me hace reflexionar sobre la humanidad. Con frecuencia olvidamos que los conflictos armados son fruto de nuestra propia humanidad; enfrentamientos que nacen de la búsqueda de intereses propios por sobre los ajenos; desacuerdos que nos llevan a ver cada vez más diferencias y antagonismos entre nosotros.
Lately, however, I begin to reflect on the past of wars; on the clashes we have suffered and the loved ones that have been lost. Too many people in the world continue to struggle every day to bring a little safety to their homes; people who even move far from their countries, to escape violence, oppression and chaos. These people can, like me, see the terrible reality of war: it is not only the lives lost, but also the strength, hopes and dreams.
Últimamente, sin embargo, comienzo a reflexionar sobre el pasado de guerras; sobre los enfrentamientos que hemos sufrido y los seres queridos que se han perdido. Demasiadas personas en el mundo siguen luchando cada día para llevar un poco de seguridad a sus hogares; personas que incluso se desplazan lejos de sus países, para escapar de la violencia, la opresión y el caos. Estas personas pueden, al igual que yo, ver la terrible realidad de una guerra: no sólo son las vidas perdidas, también las fuerzas, las esperanzas y los sueños.
War, that terrible confrontation and conflict, leaves us desolate, it leaves a deep mark on us. And although we resist by fighting violence with love, truth and justice, we are still lost, wondering who we are. Perhaps this is the legacy of human beings: to struggle among ourselves to understand who we are as individuals, what we want, and where we want to be.
La guerra, ese terrible enfrentamiento y conflicto, nos deja desolados, nos deja una huella profunda. Y aunque nos resistimos combatiendo la violencia con amor, verdad y justicia, seguimos perdidos, preguntándonos quiénes somos. Quizás este sea el legado de los seres humanos: luchar entre nosotros para entender quiénes somos como individuos, que es lo que queremos, y donde queremos estar.
I can be sure of one thing, however; that if we all unite and fight war with love, then we will be building the foundation for true peace. In this way war will no longer be necessary and yes, humanity will have the opportunity to discover who we want to be and to build a better world for all.
Puedo estar seguro de una cosa, sin embargo; que si todos nos unimos y combatimos la guerra con amor, entonces estaremos construyendo los cimientos de una verdadera paz. De esta forma la guerra ya no será necesaria y sí, la humanidad tendrá la oportunidad de descubrir quiénes queremos ser y de construir un mundo mejor para todos.
