Introduction
According to the Cambridge English Dictionary-the 20th edition, social media is a form of electronic communication that allows people to share information using the internet or mobile phones.Rouse (2020), equally defines the social media as a collective term for websites and applications which focus on communication, community –based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration.
The different types of social media are normally dedicated to forums,micro blogging, social networking, social bookmaking, social curation, and wikis (the Cambridge dictionary).
Standing on the above definitions, the writer defines the social media as a technical platform of the 21st century that makes for exchange of ideas, information sharing, electronic transactions, political campaigns, networking of relationships and peace building among a spectrum of social media users.
Upon this platform, the contemporary youths and considerable number of the aged have transited from the old, restricted era wherein people live like fish in the well, into a universal village-hood wherein people sit at home and watch the whole world through either their Smart phones or the TV, as the case may be. One can therefore, not over-emphasize the gargantuan roles the social media has played in the socialization, education, commercialization, unification and so forth of the globe in general and of Nasarawa State in particular. This essay is therefore aimed at x-raying the effects, challenges and prospects of the social media in Nasarawa State.
Positive Effects
The social media in Nasarawa state has been providing enough information and reports of different cases in the state, to make sure the people of the state have all the details of the happenings in the states. The people are not being put to stress any longer bygoing and stand beside the road to read updates of newspapers. But, with the help of social media, one can stay at home to read through the mobile phone or watch the television, and may also like to listen to the radio and yet fully satisfied with information given through the means of social media.
In the 21st century, the perception of living has dramatically changed from the perspective that life is too hard to live. It has now become an adage that life is easy and living it should be much easier. Thanks to the comfort of modern technology andglobalization, for people are becoming more intimately connected and inter dependent now than ever before. There is no gain-say that the people of the State are more united by the social media than it was in the past.
One of the great features of the unprecedented rise of the global cultures is attributed to the revolution of the internet and social media. With the help of social media in Nasarawa state, the news of corona virus which is popularly known as the “Covid-19”was spread within the state and beyond. It promotes high distribution of information acrossdistances, and it is the fastest means of passing information from far or near. The social media creates room for announcement and advertisement of new products.
In any case, it is practically impossible for anyone to gather all the youths and citizens of the State in one place for any social, religious, political or academic purpose. But through the help of the social media, that can be done with ease.
According to (Laurie 2010), social media has also reinvented politics. Interestingly, younger people are encouraged to participate actively in matters of both State and national politics. For example Engr. A. A. Slue’s successful election was helped by the proliferation of advocated groups created in support of his candidacy. Inaddition, different political groups have used this medium to campaign for elections among the spectrum of citizenry of the State. They have advertised their political ideologies via Face book, WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and so forth.This also enables the exchange of ideas between the politicians and even the common citizens. Someone can just post a comment and share his sentiment over a wall in Face book page and this could be read by all. All these are just signs of the influence of social media in the political trend of the state as it were.
