Fledgling: Part 1

in Freewriters27 days ago (edited)

Hi Readers

And we're back. While the story of the Fell Dragon is complete, Fledgling picks up where Fell Dragon Ended. There are new characters and we will once more be jumping around in time...a lot!

I haven't had too much time to work on this project, so the updates will be short for now but will get longer, the more I get done. I hope you are all ready to find out what happened in the six months that Bolx and Aidan disappeared.

He didn’t know how long he had been asleep. He opened his eyes to look at his room starting to brighten slowly. He knew it wasn’t natural sunlight but his room’s way of emulating it. He grumbled under his breath and rolled over to cover his head with his pillow. He knew if he remained like this long enough, an alarm would start sounding. He was desperately trying to figure out why he was awake, to begin with. No one else would have touched the settings in his room, yet this didn’t feel like the time he should have been awake.

The light was growing with intensity, and eventually, he sat up and flung the blankets from his body. Swinging his legs from the bed, he rubbed at the start of a headache that was brewing in his left temple. He swore at the light and demanded that it dim.

“What the hell?” He muttered under his breath as the light dimmed a little.

He closed his left eye and looked around his simple room. It was small, containing nothing more than a bed, a bedside table, and a small desk and chair in one corner. All the cupboards were built into the walls, making the room seem smaller than it actually was. The other side had an ensuite bathroom with a shower, basin, and a toilet. There was only one door, and that would lead out of his room.

Still muttering under his breath, he got up, stretched, and stumbled to the bathroom. It must have been some time since he had woken because his feet felt numb and not used to walking. His suspicion was confirmed when he looked into the mirror and saw bloodshot grey eyes staring back at him.

“Must have been a hell of a party.” He muttered as he pulled the lower lid of his eye down to see how far the redness extended, “Pity I don’t remember it.”

Feeling horrible overall, he hopped into the shower and was pleasantly surprised to find it heated perfectly. Tight muscles relaxed, and he stood in under the warm water.

“Who the hell wants me awake.” He muttered under his breath.

As soon as he felt his muscles suitably warmed up, he stepped from the shower and dried himself off. He then walked over to the closest cupboard and viewed the clothing within it. After a few minutes of debate, he dressed in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. If someone had woken but had left no instructions, he was going to make them come looking for him.

He spun around and made his way to the door before pulling it open. He looked up and down the long corridor and found no one waiting. He grinned; this was going to be fun. He knew where his first stop was going to be. It felt like it had been some time since he was awake. He would get some training in. Perhaps those who had decided to wake him would find him, or he would find them. He was curious about what would happen first.

He closed his eyes and envisioned where he needed to be. While not a common ability, he wasn’t the only one with this ability to travel the time corridors. In mid-yawn, he found himself where he wanted to be. If he had been asleep for as long as he suspected, he needed to get some exercise in.

Opening his right eye and ruffling his still-wet hair, he made his way into the training area. He found that by keeping his left eye closed, the threatening headache was kept at bay.

“And why the hell are you up?” asked a voice to his right.

I will be keeping similar days for updates, as what I had with Fell Dragon. I hope you are all ready for another trip through time and tragedy. What story would be complete without it?

This opening chapter draws us right into the mystery surrounding Bolx and Aidan’s disappearance. The hints of a lost memory and a strange awakening give the story a wonderfully disorienting feel that makes us question everything. I love how you use small details, like the dimming light and bloodshot eyes, to set the tone and build curiosity. Can’t wait to see how this intertwines with Fell Dragon and what twists the time corridors will bring. Looking forward to the next chapter and more of that time-traveling intrigue!

There will be a lot of time travel and the new characters have deep secrets that will only be revealed in the end. I look forward to it.
