Greetings readers
I have had a lot more time to work on Fledgling, and several great posts are coming. Expect the next one on Friday!
Enjoy this update!
Rubar could barely keep the tear stable. His body ached, but he tried to concentrate as those around him were trying to keep the Mad Pack from tearing their throats out. He was tired. He had cut through the veil of time, but he wasn’t sure of where it was going. He needed to get it stable, but there were too many distractions around him.
He had fought before. He had been raised in a fighting clan before his abilities had come to light. After that, he had been trained to hone that skill, but he never forgot his training. It was because of this training that he eventually found Fledge and his mother.
Fledge had been a nervous child, hiding from the world because of his ability, but his mother had been kind. She had introduced herself to Rubar and his pack long before Fledge had ever laid eyes on them. She had opened her lands to the pack, only asking that they occasionally bring a large kill to her. Rubar flinched as the energies he tried to maintain stung his hands. He was getting distracted, and he couldn’t afford it.
Between the time that Matta had approached her and Saita arriving in the time corridors, she had spent a significant duration training again. She was nowhere as powerful as she had been in her fight against Kay, but she knew how to fight, and that was all she needed right now.
Her fight with Kay centuries before had taught her to fight without fear of pain or her life, but she had something to lose now, and she needed to be careful. She needed to live. But she remembered those teeth and claws, and how they had dug into her, and the hospital stays thereafter.
Saita put herself between a particularly motley Wolven and Meedus. She couldn’t remember if he had been a fighter or if her father had only taken him along as an advisor. She was surprised to find a wall of fire separating her and the beast. She glanced over her shoulder to see Meedus grinning at her.
“I was a soldier, my dear.”
She felt regret. She hadn’t known Meedus for long, and many of her memories were blurry with age. She wished that she had had more time with him. She nodded her head once and faced toward the beast that was pacing back and forth beyond the fire. It was muttering to itself.
I don’t recognise this one.
“I’m sure you had more Wolven you knew what to do with.” Hissed Saita under her breath.
You don’t understand. You’ve never understood, never tried to understand me.
For some reason, that comment stung, surprising the queen of old. She made a mental promise that she would take the time to do better for the Fell Dragon had made as many sacrifices as she had.
“Mistress! Come out! Lead us!” roared the beast as it leapt through the fire.
The smell of scorched flesh and fur overpowered the small room as the creature leapt at Saita. She stepped back to take the assault as Meedus stepped up to blast the beast with red flame from his hand. The beast didn’t care. It raised all sets of claws and brought them down on the old man. Meedus was flung back into Saita, who was toppled over, into the tear that was still stabilising.
It happened so quickly that Rubar couldn’t do a thing. He was forced to watch the seer and the queen disappear into a time he had no control over. This had never happened to him before, and he had no idea what the result would be.
The roar of hatred from the pack behind him told him that he had run out of time. There was no way to tell where Saita and the seer would end up, and if they jumped after them, there was no chance of them ending up in the same time. However, Rubar needed to do something.
Gritting his teeth, he reached back to grip Fledge’s shirt and the nap of Red-Eye’s neck and jumped. Anywhere was better than here, and with no stable veil, the pack couldn’t find them either. This was dangerous, but it was the only way.
He sniffed the air as the veil slammed shut. No scents remained, and they couldn’t follow. Growling under his breath, he paced, first on his hind legs, and then on all fours. This was frustrating. He had been so close to getting his mistress, and she had disappeared through a tear with no destination.
“Now what?” asked one of his pack members.
He didn’t have answers, but they couldn’t stay here. They needed to feed, and soon, but he didn’t want to incur the wrath of those already running toward them.
“We feed. I know a time of chaos where we won’t get noticed by her minions. Keep your heads. Her call may be irresistible, but you must. We must find her now but from the past. Come, we go.” He raised up onto his hind legs and tore the veil open once more.
“Let’s go.”
Saita is no stranger to falling through time but with no destination, where will she end up? I guess you'll all have to join me on Friday to see where she lands.
