Fledgling: Part 43

Hello readers

With Dragon Kay once more having life, she is enjoying the ability to eat once more. A feeling most of us take for granted. Please enjoy the update!

Kay had happily torn into the food that the queen had given her. They were sitting in a hidden-away dining room, something that seemed more private than what they had been in earlier. The Dragon was well aware of the eyes of the queen on her but didn’t acknowledge her at all.

She was aware of the probing in her mind but had shut that down as soon as she noticed it. While she was happy to steal information from within Saita’s mind, she wasn’t willing to have her mind read.

“Are you as terrible as Saita has described?” she finally asked.

“Worse.” She admitted as she set a bone down. She wasn’t even sure what animal it had come from.

“And you have no interest to continue your reign of terror?”

“What would that bring me?”

“Freedom.”

“I have learnt that freedom doesn’t live up to the appeal most people think it has.”

The queen grinned and sat back. Kay didn’t like the bemused look on her face.
“I wonder how close I came to being you.”

The Dragon grinned and said, “You were nowhere as complete as Saita was. Edzeeker made the mistake of having you carry a child first. Gave you the time and mental fortitude to rip him to pieces.”

“Ha! Mental fortitude.” Barked the queen.

“You think I am wrong?”

“I think you were incorrectly informed about this timeline.”

“No, I know exactly what went down here. The thing the Heavenly forgot to do was blind me. My Wolven always kept an eye on the development of Fledglings and Champions. You never reached any stage.”

The queen fell silent before asking, “If you had so much power, why didn’t you put it to better use?”

Kay milled the answer in her mind for a few minutes, then said, “It didn’t benefit me.”

That irked the queen, as it clearly wasn’t the answer she had wanted.

“I see the young one never explained why we existed.”

“To bring balance.”

“Now, yes, but before that, the first Fell Dragon was created to siphon life from the universe. A way to cull the masses while the powerful lived. A grand scheme by the Dekai that backfired on them spectacularly. When they realised that their creation was free, they needed a way to rein it back in.”

“Thus, the Champions.”

“Exactly.”

Queen Kay sat back and thought this over before raising an eyebrow and asking, “Why are you helping her then?”

Kay considered giving her the typical answer of being an aid, and it was her duty, but she knew how this one thought. The version of Edzeeker that had been born in this timeline had made a terrible mistake forcing her to bear a son. Had she been made into what Saita was, then Saita never would have been needed.

“Why do you think I am?” countered the Dragon.

“I think that which binds you is far deeper than what Saita could ever understand. A promise, though why you would make a promise to keep yourself bound to her is something I don’t understand. You fought for freedom. Destroying the cage, hunting all others like you, and forcing a showdown. You could have let go.”

“I could of, yes.”

“Then why didn’t you?”

The Dragon didn’t like that question. She occupied herself with moving the remaining morsels of food on her plate. She had wondered that herself many times. She simply didn’t know why she had done what she did at first. It wasn’t until her consciousness had awoken in the cage after her fight with Saita that she knew what needed to be done. It also helped that she had decided to interfere.

The Dragon sighed and said, “I cannot tell you more while you intend to inform Saita of anything I say.”

The queen sat back and looked shocked. It took a few seconds for the realisation to dawn on the queen.

“She saves you, doesn’t she?”

“Do you see why she needs her ability back?”

“You two are playing a very dangerous game between the two of you.”

“She has no idea of the game that is being played around her, and I cannot breathe a word of it. I couldn’t, but now, well, this happened, and I am breathing air in over a century.” Kay sat back and sighed. “I can think again. My emotions are returning to me, and I don’t feel myself.”

Dragon Kay moved her left hand to her right and her right hand to her left. She had often thought of how to explain what was happening, but it was difficult. There were so many time jumps that were going to happen and revealing even one could change the course they had been set on. Her existence in a physical body may already have had an impact on what was to happen.

“Tell me one more thing, then I will leave you to do what you want to.” Said the queen.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t mind a nap.” Said Kay as she set her hands on either side of the plate. “But sure, ask your question, and I will deem if it is something I am willing to answer.”

“You and Bolx.”

It wasn’t a question. It was a statement. One that stung for so many reasons. Kay sighed softly and said, “He was my only friend.”

Well, that will be an interesting history to expand upon!

Kay the Fell Dragon is still me favourite one of her incarnations 😀

I'm so glad! She's actually a character with a lot of depth that was never explored in Fell Dragon. Fledgling is about making up for that and filling in the blanks of why certain events happened.
