let the words tell you
nothing that you wouldn't tell yourself
feel the truth in the pudding
it is not true that the preposterous could never happen
it is not true that half of human hearts are corrupt
it is not true that your neighbor could be your enemy
it is not true that black magic is scarce
it is not true that toxins cure
Stop letting their words tell you anything

freewrite challenge. Today's prompt is let the words tell you. This is my entry to @mariannewest's daily
Freewrite poetry - there's nothing like it. For this one, I wrote 159 words in 4 minutes. I then went back, removed half the lines, and cleaned up typos.
Out came my inner being, strengthened by my letting my own words tell me.
You didn't mention mockery, but it came to mind. Somewhere else today you mentioned that in speaking the truth you attract hecklers, or something like that.
“Mockery developed as a conformity enforcer [...] A good dose of mockery can still shut down critical thinking and make us fall right in line.”
― Cracked.com, You Might Be a Zombie and Other Bad News
“We must be passionate and controlled but not reckless. Truth is not established by shame, guilt, or coercion or tribalism. It must be established by reason, evidence, presentation, compassion, and yes, faith. It cannot be established by ridicule, mocking, or insults of sacred icons or traditions but by disproving them or establishing their lack or veracity or usefulness.”
― Leviak B. Kelly, The Leprechaun Delusion
Those of us who do not parrot the provided talking points get heckled, gaslighted, and attacked, no matter how innocuous our statements, or how kind. But it's gone beyond reason, reason does not get through to most of us. We have definitely been psychologically tampered with, and our powers of reason have been, for many of us, disabled.
I had a strange event today. I encountered an old friend of mine, who was struggling on a public street with her newborn baby in a stroller, her five year old pissed about something, and her three year old a full block away. She was masked, and I was not. My first thought was "oh she probably does not want me so close to her, her baby and her child" so I said "hello nice to see you" and walked on. An hour later (after my lesson), I realized she'd probably needed help! Pre-covid, that would have been my only thought, and I would have offered help. This as an example of how much more difficult it is these days to tell right from wrong, good from bad.
Aww, the neighbor woman, outnumbered by her three children, and not offered assistance because....Covid. How it has rearranged our thinking.
My sister is here from Germany. She had no choice: get vaccinated, or get fired. Conditions in Germany during lockdown have been much worse, in many ways, than in the States. The curfews, the fines, the closed doors. The daily testing. The flight.... eh. I don't want to talk about this stuff right now. The world is in disarray. The people could revolt, but where do we find the real powers that need to be deposed....
Well said. The pudding somehow stands out as a very apt place to feel the truth. Because of the old saying, "The proof is in the pudding" - The original proverb meant "The proof of the pudding is in the eating" (or tasting) but it got abbreviated. You had to try the food to know whether it was good. Some mother must have said it to a fussy eater who wouldn't let that spoonful of jiggly pudding touch his lips. (Our son was so horrified at the jiggling red jello, he has not, to this day, allowed jello to touch his lips.)
LOL, this one makes me want to retort, "Yeah, it's MORE THAN HALF who are corrupt." But I'm feeling cynical. I'll resist.
They are not corrupt, they are misled. Different. But they do think that the rest of us are hateful, violent, selfish, homophobic, racist etc. Very strange that they think this highly irrational thing.
That's def my favorite line. I can spin its meaning a bunch of ways. But I like the original - truth can only be found in our own experiences.
