Back when the economy was favourable and things were cheaper, most host don't mind gate-crashing, as long as you are not there to cause any trouble.

But, I don't think it's common now because things are on the high side and most host try to ensure the food and drinks are enough for their guests.

In some cases, even if you were invited, you might not be able to get any to eat unless the party is well planned, with reservations or a gate pass. Most importantly, in order to pull that off, the venue has to be in a place where people can't get access to easily without a pass.
