Review of Malinche by author Jane Lewis Brandt
A book with a personal story
Hello people of Hive today I bring you the review of one of my favorite books that has a story to tell.
The book I bring you today is called Malinche by an English writer Jane Lewis Brandt, I did not find more information about her on the internet and on the front and back cover of the copy of my property there is no information about her nationality, nor her profession, only her photo on the dust jacket.
Anyway, the important thing is that it is a wonderfully written book, its narrative completely grabs you, it is the story of a native Mayan daughter of a cacique whose tribe was dominated by the Aztecs, Malinche was given as a slave to Hernan Cortez, This Mayan woman was very intelligent, not only did she learn to speak Spanish correctly very early, which made it easier for her to converse and become Cortez's interpreter and later his lover, having a son with him, but her achievements did not stop there, she became his closest advisor and was also Moctezuma's confidant.
This book is written in two voices, Arturo Mondragon's, who was deeply in love with her, and Malinche's own voice, both of which narrate the horrors of the conquest of Mexico and above all the image they give us of the fall of Tenochtitlan, which is totally overwhelming and sad.
I think it is a book not to be missed for all reading lovers, its narrative is totally gripping from beginning to end and you can't put it down until you finish it. It took me 4 days to finish it and only because sometimes the events narrated affected me so much that I had to make a small pause to process everything that was happening and to be able to continue reading this wonderful novel.
I have to say that this effect of not being able to let go of the book until I finished it not only happened to me, but to a friend as well, the truth is that when I finally finished the book I was so shocked that I told a friend who is also a lover of reading and asked me to read it, I have to clarify that to this day is one of the few people who lend him books, although to tell the truth is the only one. So I lent him the novel on a Friday and just like me the author's prose caught him.
Without being able to stop reading, Saturday went by, Sunday came and I still couldn't take my eyes off him and his wife, who is also a friend of mine, to tell the truth, the three of us are colleagues, we studied together at the university. The truth is that she was tired of Rodolfo, who was totally immersed in reading and who did not answer her when she spoke to him or asked him anything, he continued reading, transported to the story of Malinche, he did not say anything or do anything but read. Annoyed by such indifference Esperanza ripped the book out of his hands and threw it out of the window, it is worth mentioning that they lived on the eleventh floor (11), my friend stared at her and said (- you know that book is Solange's) she did not expect that and without saying anything she ran downstairs to rescue the book. If you look closely at the picture you will see that the book is battered. I still remember how difficult it was for her to explain to me what happened, her face full of shame apologizing for the mistreatment of the book.
I can only tell you to read it, it will not leave you indifferent.
