Some people use the freewrite to craft stories they work on for hours, others write for 5 minutes and publish without fixing anything.
You are encouraged to set the timer and not stop for 5 minutes to allow your subconscious to take over. In the end, it is all up to you having fun :)
There are no real rules! :)
