Excerpt from a thing I wrote

There is a chance that we are living through our last page of cosmic history already. Perhaps this is as far as we get, and an asteroid as-yet undetected is due to wipe us out within the week. But even if we all disappear tomorrow and the Solar System hurtles on without us cold and dead for the rest of eternity, even if we really are alone, and after we are gone the universe never sees itself again, and even if it all comes to nothing in the end, whatever “the end” even means, if all our great works and learnings come undone, our physics, our arts, our juvenile technologies, our temples and monuments to Progress: libraries and skyscrapers and cantilever bridges and space observatories, if it all goes to hell, turns to dust, falls back to the ground in unrecognizable pieces, and the names we gave to the elements and subatomic particles and ten thousand unique human emotions gone, all gone, still – it will have been nothing less than a miracle –- that for a brief moment on this planet, a few million years on this blue and green speck of galactic dust, just this once, just for a little while, the Cosmos was awake, and it saw what a beautiful thing it was.
