Sayings Saturday # 5: It's Okay to Make Mistakes

in Freewriters3 years ago
Hello Hiveians! It's another dose of inspirational quotes for Sayings Saturday. This quote is quite applicable to all of us since each of us has his/her own 'oops' moment. Even if we try to be careful in doing some stuffs, there are just some errors that we can't simply get away once in a while. We even put certain measures to prevent or correct mistakes we make. Just like in the keyboard, there are backspace and delete keys for us to change what we mistakenly encoded. Also in computers, there are choices to undo errors.

A man must be big enough to admit his mistakes, smart enough to profit from them, and strong enough to correct them.
— John C. Maxwell
The quote I choose this week is by John C. Maxwell, who is a renowned author for books on leadership. Three of his best-selling books are Developing the Leader Within You, 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, and The 21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader.

What did I do wrong?
Any mistake or problem incurred due to errors could never be fixed without identifying the problem. A problem is half-solved if we know what the problem is. There are times, admitting one's mistake is the most difficult thing to do. Instead of fault acceptance, we run in circles to try to determine the root cause of the problem. I find the blog by Frank Sonnenberg, a well-known author, quite relevant. He shared how people would react to their mistakes.

Sometimes, we get to miss or tend to ignore things that we have done wrong. If someone would be able to call you out but still you don't accept your fault, that is already a detour in solving the problem. There are a lot of reasons why we don't accept our mistakes. It could be we are afraid of punishments or consequences that could ruin our reputation. There are times, we are in denial and become too defensive to the point that we might point fingers at others.
How do I deal with it?
There are mistakes that can still be corrected. But there are also those that could not be rectified. Nevertheless, dealing with the consequences is the only action that we can make. Or just a simple apology could really make a difference. The most important after acknowledging our lapses and mending the damages is of course, how we learn from these mistakes and improve ourselves so as to avoid making them again. We could not be that perfect always but as long as we do our best in everything we do really makes a great difference. Cheers!
