I am sure that lots of people would empathize with Hōsai, for most of us have thought about withdrawing from the world entirely at least once, to living in solitude and paying the price of living only with ourselves.
I believe that even though it brought him sorrow, and mental challenges as well, it takes an enormous amount of determination, and will, to be able to not reconnect again with the world, even at its lowest points, like in sickness. Maybe discipline was the key.
