Who Are You [The Heart Remembers]

in Blockchain Poets4 days ago (edited)

"Who are you" she exclaimed,
Her eyes glistened against the dim light
Terrified yet gathering all her might
She sat on the bed ready to fight.

"It is me, Mom!" her daughter whispered
"Don't you know me now?" she cried
Tears rolled down shocked and in pain
Her mother's memory may have waned

She looked around with eyes that doubt
"Where am I?" still confused she asked
"Hospital, Mom" We've been here for some time
"I see. Thought it's somebody else's home"

She held her hands, hugged her tight
Caressed her back softly as she often does
"Remember you said you love when I do this?"
"This is me, your daughter CJ"

"I see... I see... I'm sorry my eyes deceived me"
Though at times the mind may drift away
Love's gentle touch still believes
The heart remembers what words can't say.

So they hugged and shared a laugh
Trusting in their hearts
That when memories fade
Their bond remains a love beyond compare.

It's been a while since I penned my thoughts in phrases and although I'm not good at it, I crafted this based on personal experiences.

It never occurred to me that Mom would not recognize me one day. So I was shocked when while at the hospital, she looked at me and asked who I was. Then she did it again when my sister and I were tending to her one night.

When I was lying on the couch next to her bed in their house, she forced herself to get up, glaring at me she inquired who am I. Dad who was resting in the next room came out. Well, at least Mom recognized him immediately. Pointing at me she asked again, "Who's that girl on the sofa?"

So yes, this simple composition is about that. It dawned on me that my mother's memory was already fading although my father believed it might be the side effects of her medications. Perhaps he was right (or some coincidence) because last week when I spent some days with them, Mom never questioned who I was.

It takes a lot of courage to face this kind of reality. May you have more strength and keep hoping 🙏🏽

I think understanding it is a part of a person's life cycle makes it easier to accept at some point

Thank you lots!

Oh so sorry about your mom's condition. All will be well. You penned your thought in phrases so beautifully and it hit the deepest part of my heart. Love and Light.

Thanks for your kind words, Amie. Mom's cancer seems to have affected her memory sometimes she couldn't recognize people.

🤗 stay strong. It hurts I know but we can only do our best.

Thank you. I'm getting better at being strong every day :)

Good and emotive poem.

I feel your views.

Old grandma also asked who I was a year before she died.

I was worried but later was told old age wanes memories too.

Good one and nice exposition.

Greetings.

Thanks for your kind remarks. It seems to be common among aging people. Mom is 73 and has been ill for years. She used to have a sharp memory but it seems it's starting to wane.

Welcomed.

Some medications can cause foggy memories, it's happened to my grandma.
Your poem carries so much emotion and I just pray that you will have your Mom fully back again.
Stay strong.

That might be a contributing factor to my mom's fading memory. Thank you for your prayers. 💗

I don't have any word to comfort you in this case. At the old age such kind of thing is normal and you are helpless. I don't know how it feels when someone close don't recognize. I never think about such a situation.

It's okay, Inti. It's that one reality we have to deal with at some point.

Just tell her, "Someone you love who loves you more." I hope your mother gets better sooner. !BBH

What a really nice phrase you got there. I love it :) Thank you

i think that's one of the worse thing that can happen... forgetting things... forgetting your sons, is terrible for a parent... forgetting your whole life, living as if you never lived...terrible...

It is a reality that most people cannot avoid as they advance in age, more so when they are ill.
