Picking shells at the shore

pick shells as the sea
walks its body. hold it light;
the milky way's flute.
put a mouth on the distant
susurrus. night leaves shells in
the trough. hear ocean's
lap ashore on the creak &
groan of drowning. hold
away the lamp post stranger's
touch; enter a room & be
stranger than any
mirror. something blinks close on
the sky sea's forehead
& shakes. drink water, taste salt
as the throat's bottom swallows
& is a flood, drunk
in a city that doesn't
know, dragging anchors
of dead ships & ghosts with mud
heels. there's no escape. open
a window & now,
an open window burns on
the stake. the condemned's fever
eats water. when recovered,
return the shore & sit as
a dead palm tree boy
listens—for the other sea
in the other place,
where the milky way's flute sings.
On the other side of town,
a flood rises on
its haunches, another inch
near the bed's headrest.
a prisoner tosses stone
ripples & dreams of burning.

Yes I am a student of the language. Thanks for stopping here. 🤗 What does it mean for you?

Another great poem! Are you from Nigeria? I don't think I've ever read Nigerian poetry before, I've only read one novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, which is the best known around here. !PIZZA !LUV

Yes I'm Nigerian. Oh there is a lot of Nigerian poetry out there. If you want I can send you links to some of my published stuff within Africa and outside.

Of course, I will be happy to read those texts!

Cool. How do I get them to you?

Okay. Will look for you

I'm attempting to figure out what this poetry means. Is it about the flute of the Milky Way?

Maybe it is about the ocean. Maybe it is about loneliness. Maybe it is about listening to a shell on the beach.

It is an experiment. Like every work I post. It takes you wherever you choose to go. For each person derives their own meaning.

What you're attempting to define is really complex.
People who have been hurt are often more sensitive in this matter, making them more prone to meaningful poetry.

Good job, my friend

Not only those who have hurt but also those who seek. I have used poetry to heal and now I use poetry to understand and find meaning. But it is always an experiment with language.

It teaches us and also exercises our brain.

After seeking medical attention for my sickness, I began writing on a daily basis. My psychiatric doctor advised me to keep a journal and to write. Starting small, I'm becoming increasingly eager to write. The ideas keep coming. I have to get rid of it somewhere.

This brings back memories of my teens. I enjoyed writing and even won first place for story writing in high school. I remembered writing a few short stories (in Bahasa Melayu, my native language), but I never tried to write again after starting my new job in 2000.

You should try it more often then. Writing has kept me away from darkness. It is my one true companion.

I do agree with you. I will continue writing no matter where I am. If I don't have a paper and pen, I will just use my mobile phone and write on my notes.

Your words hold me, prisoner, through every line there is more yet it feels like it is less as I try to piece together what can be a deeper meaning or not.

This is hit deep. I am soaked in the opening line as it is not very often that we see the sea walking its body.

Oh Tez, I've never seen the sea. Im a landlocked human. I know of rivers and streams but I have never seen the sea. How does the sea walk it's body? How does anything that knows grief, the taste of salt, moves?
