Si eres de los que les gusta disfrutar del tiempo en casa para compartir con la familia, olvidándote de las tareas repetitivas y tediosas, esta es tu solución. En este artículo te contaré, desde mis experiencias como ingeniero en automatización, algunas de las cosas indispensables que debes saber sobre la domótica y cómo puede convertir tu hogar en una casa inteligente.

If you enjoy spending time at home with your family, forgetting about repetitive and tedious tasks, this is your solution. In this article, I will tell you, from my experience as an automation engineer, some of the essential things you need to know about domotics and how it can turn your home into a smart home.
¿Qué es la Domótica?
Primero, debemos hablar de la teoría. Veamos el concepto de domótica que aparece en Wikipedia: “son los sistemas capaces de automatizar una vivienda
o edificación de cualquier tipo…”. En otras palabras, son los equipos y dispositivos que puedes instalar para controlar y automatizar muchos de los sistemas que normalmente realizas de forma manual en tu hogar, por ejemplo: la iluminación, el clima, tu sistema de seguridad y mucho más. Su ventaja fundamental es que puedes realizar todas estas tareas desde tu celular, desde cualquier lugar que te encuentres, incluso desde otro país.
What is Domotics?
First, we must talk about the theory. Let's see the concept of domotics that appears on Wikipedia: "are systems capable of automating a home or building of any kind...". In other words, they are the equipment and devices that you can install to control and automate many of the systems that you normally perform manually in your home, for example: lighting, climate, your security system and much more. Its fundamental advantage is that you can perform all these tasks from your cell phone, from anywhere you are, even from another country.
Aplicaciones de la Domótica
Hay un error común que las personas cometen al referirse a casas inteligentes y es que creen que el término solo aplica a una vivienda que tenga implementado todas las funciones automatizadas, y no es así. Con tener al menos una de ellas es válido aplicar el término. Pero, ¿qué funciones suelen automatizarse? Vamos a mencionar algunas:
Iluminación: es posible programar el encendido y apagado de las luces del hogar para que ocurran en determinados horarios, además de con la voz o desde tu teléfono móvil. También permite la posibilidad de encender o apagar cuando detecte presencia. Este último ejemplo es en el que tengo más experiencia instalando y, de hecho, son mis preferidas, sobre todo en áreas exteriores.
Clima: controlar la temperatura del hogar desde cualquier lugar debe ser una bendición, no solo desde el punto de vista del confort de llegar a la casa y que te reciba con una temperatura adecuada a tus preferencias, sino que también permitirá ahorrar energía y, por tanto, dinero. Debes haberte dado cuenta de mi forma despectiva de hablar, y es que nunca he podido trabajar con uno de estos en hogares, aunque sí en hoteles, pues tuve la suerte de hacer por un buen tiempo prácticas laborales en mi época de estudiante. Pero su implementación difiere en muchísimos aspe
ctos, así que mejor lo dejamos para otros artículos.
Seguridad: tener acceso para conocer el estado actual en tiempo real y controlar cada uno de tus sistemas de seguridad, ya sean alarmas contra intrusos, detección de incendio, escapes de gases, o cámaras de seguridad, etc., es algo sumamente importante. Y si a eso le sumamos que puede hacerse desde cualquier parte del mundo desde tu teléfono celular, pues sencillamente es algo que considero fundamental para cada casa. Aquí tengo mucha más experiencia que en las demás, pues tengo más de 5 años de experiencia trabajando para una empresa estatal de seguridad como instalador y proyectista, y desde el año pasado creé con unos amigos un emprendimiento donde solemos instalar y dar mantenimiento a sistemas de este tipo pero a viviendas particulares. Electrodomésticos: este es un tema en el que tengo poca o nula experiencia, más que la teoría. Y es que en Cuba (mi país), acceder a muchos de estos artículos es extremadamente difícil y costoso. Igual puedo garantizarte que no es para nada complejo, así que si tienes la posibilidad de adquirir productos de este tipo, debes hacerlo.
¿Qué productos? Pues, lavadoras, cocinas, hornos, aspiradoras y muchísimos más productos inteligentes que harán de tu día a día en el hogar mucho más sencillo.
Debo destacar que, para lograr un aprovechamiento total de cada una de estas funciones automatizadas, siempre será necesario tener un nivel de conectividad, ya sea Wi-Fi, Bluetooth u otros protocolos de comunicación. Y, por supuesto, si deseas monitorizarlos y controlarlos desde cualquier otro sitio donde estés, fuera de casa, los deberás tener conectados a internet.
Applications of Domotics
There is a common mistake that people make when referring to smart homes, and that is that they believe that the term only applies to a home that has implemented all automated functions, and it is not. Having at least one of them is valid to apply the term. But, what functions are usually automated? Let's mention some:
Lighting: it is possible to program the turning on and off of the lights in your home to occur at certain times, in addition to with your voice or from your mobile phone. It also allows the possibility of turning on or off when it detects presence. This last example is the one in which I have more experience installing and, in fact, they are my favorite, especially in outdoor areas.
Climate: controlling the temperature of your home from anywhere should be a blessing, not only from the point of view of the comfort of arriving at home and being received with a temperature suitable for your preferences but also allows saving energy and, therefore, money. You must have noticed my disdainful way of speaking, and that is because I have never been able to work with one of these in homes, although I have in hotels, as I was lucky enough to do for a good time as a student intern. But their implementation differs in many ways, so let's leave it for other articles.
Security: having access to know the current state in real-time and control each of your security systems, whether it be alarms against intruders, fire detection, gas leaks, or security cameras, etc., is extremely important. And if we add to that that it can be done from anywhere in the world from your cell phone, it is simply something that I consider fundamental for every home. Here, I have much more experience than in the others, as I have over 5 years of experience working for a state security company as an installer and project manager, and since last year, I created a venture with some friends where we usually install and maintain systems of this type but for private homes. I must highlight that, to achieve total use of each of these automated functions, it will always be necessary to have a level of connectivity, whether it be Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or other communication protocols. And, of course, if you want to monitor and control them from any other place where you are, outside of your home, you will have to have them connected to the internet.

Otro tema muy discutido es el costo. En mi opinión, ni muy muy, ni tan tan (es un dicho cubano). Esto puede variar según la cantidad de funciones que quieras automatizar y su complejidad, porque esto define la cantidad de dispositivos que lleva tu instalación. De igual forma, puedes revisar las muchísimas ofertas que existen, hay de todos los precios y para todos los gustos. Is Domotics expensive?
Another highly debated topic is the cost. In my opinion, not too much, not too little (it's a Cuban saying). This can vary depending on the number of functions you want to automate and their complexity because this defines the number of devices your installation takes. Similarly, you can review the many offers that exist, there are all prices and for all tastes.
