The pi 3 didn’t need heat sinks and made almost no difference but was commonly sold to make more on kits from third party sellers.

The pi 4 actually benefited from a heat sink but wasn’t critical unless you ran the pi at high loads and overcooked.

The pi 5 is just pushing the boundaries of a single chip pc and now it isn’t optional as it will throttle almost immediately without cooling.
