There is a small, almost paradisiacal beach in the north of Tenerife that is surrounded by cliffs. No, I am not talking about Paya la Garañona, which is practically inaccessible on foot for everyone, but about a much more touristic and safer beach, called Playa de Castro. This small beach is really beautiful in summer when the sea is calmer and the sand is more uncovered at low tide.
Existe una pequeña playa casi paradisíaca al norte de Tenerife que se encuentra rodeada de riscos. No, no estoy hablando de Paya la Garañona, la cual es prácticamente inaccesible a pie para todos, sino de una playa mucho más turistica y segura, llamada Playa de Castro. Esta pequeña playa es realmente hermosa en verano, cuando el mar está más calmo y la arena se encuentra más descubierta durante la marea baja.
I had already mentioned this beach in my previous post: Rambla de Castro: One of My Favorite Trails in Tenerife🌴🌊🚶♂️. The Rambla de Castro trail is on site, and my visit to the trail did not include a visit to this beach, but being there and seeing from above with my own eyes the beauty of this beach I wanted to go down to see it up close. It was worth it, as I took many pictures of this beach at its best, in the middle of summer, with low tide and relatively calm waves.
Ya había mencionado esta playa en mi anterior post: Rambla de Castro: One of My Favorite Trails in Tenerife🌴🌊🚶♂️. El sendero de Rambla de Castro se encuentra en el lugar, y mi visita al sendero no incluía la visita a esta playa, pero al estar alí y ver desde arriba con mis propios ojos la belleza de esta playa quise bajar a verla de cerca. Valió la pena, ya que tomé muchas fotografías de esta playa en su mejor momento, en medio del verano, con marea baja y olejae relativamente calmo.
There is a network of trails in the area, which is very pleasant to walk along. One of the paths goes down to this beach. It is a descent of approximately 50 to 100 meters of unevenness. The climb is not at all easy but it is not very difficult either. At the top, the network of trails also takes you to a small observation fort with old cannons. This is Fort San Fernando, which dates from 1898. From this place, it is possible to observe not only Castro Beach but another adjacent beach called Playa de La Fajana. It is also possible to see from there the ruins of the Gordejuela water elevator.
Existe un ared de caminos en el lugar, el cual es muy agradable de recorrer. Uno de los caminos baja hacia esta playa. Es una bajada de aproximadamente 50 a 100 metros de desnivel. La subida no es del todo fácil pero tampoco es de gran dificultad. Arriba, la red de caminos también te lleva a un pequeño fuerte de observación con cañones antiguos. Se trata del Fuerte San Fernando, que data de 1898. Desde este lugar, es posible observar no solo la PLaya de Castro, sino otra playa adyacente denominada Playa de La Fajana. También, es posible ver desde allí las ruinas del elevador de aguas de Gordejuela.
This other beach, located to the east of Playa de Castro, has two ways to reach it. One way to access Playa de La Fajana is through Playa de Castro at low tide, since the path is cleared to walk to this other beach. Another way is through a road that exists above, which seems that it is not advisable to travel according to some signs that I think I have seen in the place. If I remember correctly, it was on this beach where I had black sand in my hands for the first time. I must say that the black sand can be quite soft, although perhaps not as soft as the traditional light fine sand.
Esta otra playa, ubicada al Este de Playa de Castro, posee dos caminos para llegar a ella. Una manera de acceder a Playa de La Fajana es a través de la Playa de Castro en marea baja, ya que se despeja el camino para pasar caminando a esta otra playa. Otra manera es a través de un camino que existe arriba, el cual parece que no es recomendable transitar según unas señalizaciones que creo haber visto en el lugar. Si mal no recuerdo, fue en esta playa en donde por primera vez tuve area negra en mis manos. Debo decir que la arena negra puede llegar a ser bastante suave, aunque quizás no tanto como la tradicional arena fina clara.
The arrival at this beach, at the bottom of the stairs, is much more beautiful than what you see from above, and, of course, in the photos. As soon as you arrive, you can see a small waterfall, round stones, some green vegetation, and the beginning of the black sand a little further on. And to all this visual environment you must add the sensation of the endless sound of the waves and the sea wind. Having been to beaches of the Caribbean Sea in Venezuela, being on a beach like this is a totally different and very pleasant sensation as well. La llegada a esta playa, al final de las escaleras, es mucho más hermoso de lo que se ve desde arriba, y, por supuesto, en las fotos. A penas llegas, puedes observar una pequeña cascada de agua, piedras redondas, un poco de vegetación verde, y el comienzo de la arena negra un poco más allá. Y a todo este entorno visual debes agregarle la senasción del sonido interminable de las olas y el viento marino. It is a very quiet and exotic place. It may not have services nearby as it is a somewhat isolated beach with no vehicle access, but it is worth the experience. At that time there were few people on the beach, partly because it was still early in the morning. I had arrived early so that I could walk the Rambla de Castro trail in good time. On the right side of the beach, there is a small cave, apparently of little extension, however, I did not dare to enter it. On the left side of the beach, there is a second waterfall, which generates a small freshwater channel that runs through the sand and flows into the sea. Like Playa Benijo, bathing at this type of beach must be done with care and respect for the sea, as they are isolated and wild beaches.
Es un lugar muy tranquilo y exótico. Quizás no tenga servicios cercanos ya que es una playa un poco aislada y sin acceso para vehículos, pero vale la pena la experiencia. En ese momento habían pocas personas en la playa, en parte porque aún era un poco temprano en la mañana. Había llegado temprano al lugar para así recorrer el sendero de Rambla de Castro con tiempo. Al lado derecho de la playa, existe uns pequeña cueva, al parecer de poca extensión, sin embargo, no me animé a entrar en ella. Del lado izquierdo de la playa, existe una segunda cascada de agua, la cual genera un pequeño canal de agua dulce que transcurre por la arena y desemboca en el mar. Al igual que Playa Benijo, el baño en este tipo de playas debe ser con cuidado y respeto al mar, ya que son playas aisladas y salvajes.

Remember to always travel in places like these with a lot of respect and care for the environment and the local people.
