Travel Throwback - Roadtrip to Hermanus

For those of you that may not know, Hermanus in the Western Cape, South Africa is one of the greatest places to go whale watching, the best time of the year to see the whales is between July and November however there is obviously no guarantee. We decided to take a chance towards the end of August, with high hopes.

We made it a day long road trip to enjoy all the sights and adventures along the way from Cape Town to Hermanus, stopping at beaches and nature reserves. At one of out stops we found a beautiful colony of penguins, they were all sat so close to the walkway which was such a special sight.

In Hermanus itself we found a cosy spot to watch out for the whales... we sat in a patch of grass amongst these munching dassies. Did you know, these tiny creatures happen to be the closest living relative to the largest land mammal... the African elephant?
We watched these daisies mow the grass for hours waiting for the whales to emerge, show a tale... anything... unfortunately the entire day we did not see a single whale. 😕

We did find this big boy, an incredible whale sculpture, statue outside of the whale museum... this was the only whale spotted the entire day, which was incredibly sad. However we did still have such an incredible day walking around the small town near the beach

It was a beautiful almost clear-skied day, the sights were breathtaking (regardless of not having any whale tales in sight.)

Along the coast there were awesome sculptures and artworks scattered around, I am not entirely sure I understand the washing machine below...

...But there were pretty cool sculptures.

For lunch we stopped off for lunch where I opted for an Oreo waffle, it was such a nice waffle!! If you find yourself tired of waiting for whales to appear in Hermanus, highly recommend stopping by this restaurant on Marine Drive, its called Belgian Waffles, Beer & Burgers.

Try their waffles, you will not regret it! https://www.facebook.com/thebelgianhermanus/

We stopped at a few shops and stops along the road trip down to Hermanus and on the way home, buying snacks, games and memorabilia. I loved the name of this place we found in Pringle Bay, it was filled with all sorts of tasty treats!

At one of our stops we bought these awesome stackable kitties and puppies and spent hours trying to see which one of us could make the highest tower, don't knock it till you try it, it was tons of fun!

All in all it was a genuinely fantastic day, filled with adventure and fun. I am sad we missed the magnificent sea creatures we went to spot but besides that, Hermanus is such a fun spot to visit, absolutely loved it!
