Berlin, the capital of Germany, was the first German city where I stayed for long, and I even lived there for some time. I fell in love with its artistic and free-spirited atmosphere. Although the city has changed a lot since the 2010s, becoming cleaner and losing some of its artists, there are still many places I adore. One of them is Dussmann, perhaps the largest bookstore in Germany, located right in the heart of Berlin.
In Japan, bookstores open late at night aren’t uncommon. But in Germany, most shops close around 8 PM. That’s why Dussmann feels so special—it stays open until midnight on weekdays and until 23:30 on Saturdays 🥳
From the basement to the third floor, you’re surrounded by countless books. As the night gets later, the place grows quieter, creating a paradise for book lovers. With large tables, chairs, and even cushions, you could easily spend hours here.
My favorite section is the one with books about nature, plants, gardening, and cooking. This floor also houses the children’s book and games section, where I often spot games and books my daughter used to enjoy. It’s a nostalgic and inspiring space, especially for design ideas.
For foreigners, the foreign-language books section is a delight. Not only does it include books for adults, but it also offers a variety of children’s books. This corner has remained the same since I lived in Berlin, and every visit brings a wave of nostalgia.
It’s not just books—Dussmann also has an impressive stationery selection, making it irresistible for stationery enthusiasts.
I spent a long time in the stationery section, finally deciding on a cute notebook set and a fig-themed postcard as souvenirs. Although I hesitated to buy books since they would add to my luggage, I couldn’t resist supporting my favorite bookstore. I chose a gardening book for myself and a small book on constellations to enjoy with my daughter. I learned constellations a bit from my grandpa who worked as a tanker ship captain and want to explore more. Writing this post now, I’m already looking forward to my next visit ... 😁
Outside Dussmann, there’s a Maritim Hotel, a German chain hotel. We often stay there for me just to fully enjoy Dussmann, my daughter love the hotel because it has a pool, and my partner love it because of its nostalgic atmosphere. The hotel is almost door-to-door with Dussmann, separated only by a street. Even in the colder months, I can stroll over without a jacket and immerse myself in books until closing time.
I’m thrilled to finally share my love for Dussmann on Worldmappin. It’s a must-visit for book lovers and anyone looking for a quiet and calm nighttime activity in Berlin.
