When you are in Cebu, Hiking and Camping is a MUST. If you are fond of hiking or simply admiring nature's beauty, I bet you've explored Cebu's different trails and peaks. Osmena Peak, Mount Manunggal, Mt. Mauyog, and Mount Naupa are just a few of the mountains you have heard of in Cebu. However, have you heard of Mount Manghilao in the North? Have you heard of its panoramic beauty and Instagrammable view? You don't want to miss this, so keep reading for more insightful stories.
Mount. Manghilao is a famous mountain in Danao, City Cebu. It is considered the highest peak of Danao City, with an elevation of approximately 629 meters or 2,066 ft. above sea level. It is famous for hiking, road biking, and running. Today, it is considered one of Cebu's most popular pilgrimage sites, and a vast black cross is erected on top of it. Mostly, hikers tend to hike in the mountains to offer their prayers. It is also famous for the folklore stories surrounding it.
HIKING AT THE MANGHILAO
Hiking at Mt. Manghilao is moderately challenging. Depending on your pacing, it takes about 2-3 hours to arrive at the peak. Along the trail, you'll find a few trees that give shade and a moment of relief from exhaustion, but for the most part, the path is open with limited tree cover. That is why sunblock and sun heat protection are essential to avoid sunburn. Do not forget to bring water as there are no nearby stores in the area or in the middle of hiking. It is also essential that your mind and body be in good condition while hiking.
The walk to the mountain may be exhausting and draining, but trust me, once you arrive there, the view will never disappoint you. Once you arrive, you will see a big black cross erected on top of it. Of course, you will see the overlooking view of the place. If the weather cooperates and you come early in the morning, you'll witness a fog.
HOW TO GET THERE
Suppose you are coming from the South. Head to the North Bus Terminal, and, as the driver, drop you off in Danao City. The ride usually takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes. Travel time may vary depending of how past your transportation is and if there is no heavy traffic. The fare is around ₱60-80 pesos per head.
From Danao City Terminal, please search for a motorcycle and tell them to go to Mount. Manghilao. The fare is around ₱80-100 pesos per head.
Note: No climbing fee. Greet the locals and respect the nature. Leave no Trace
What are you waiting for? Prepare and add this to your bucket list! See you there!
