Speaking of stories, I would like to share with you an adventure that I had yesterday. I had the pleasure of traveling to a famous enchantment in Cebu—the beautiful Sto. Niño Church. According to my records, in early 1521, a Spanish expedition led by Charles I and Ferdinand Magellan came out to open a voyage from Spain to look at the Spice Islands. After sailing the huge Pacific Ocean, they reached Limasawa, Southern Leyte, on April 7, 1521. It was there that they found Raja Kulambo, who brought them to Raja Humabon, the ruler of Cebu, and his wife, Hara Humamay. On April 14, Magellan presented them with three gifts: a model of Christ known as the Ecce Homo, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the Sto Niño, symbolizing the beginning of their baptism and forming a strategic alliance.
On April 21, 1521, on the very first circumnavigation of the area led by Ferdinand Magellan, they planted the cross upon reaching Cebu Island. This legendary event marked the historical creation of Roman Catholicism, and Europeans had an impact in the Philippines. Magellan's Cross stands proudly within our midst, a symbol of the legendary event at the same time as Raja Humabon, the ruler of Cebu, embraced the Christian faith.
The original cross was believed to have healing powers, so people started chipping it away, prompting the authorities and officers to create a new one. This alternative pass was carefully crafted from tindalo wood, guaranteeing its strength and energy. Within the pavilion, a breathtaking mural was depicted on the ceiling, which portrays the massive second of Raja Humabon's baptism by way of Fr. Pedro Valderrama and the symbolic act of Ferdinand Magellan planting the wood cross . The paintings capture this defining moment beautifully, reminding us of the profound impact of Christianity in the early days.
A couple of days after the mass baptism, Ferdinand Magellan launched a military excursion, attacking Mactan. The locals, under the leadership of Lapu-Lapu, strongly resisted Ferdinand Magellan's aggression. In any case, Ferdinand Magellan lost his life in the Battle of Mactan. After his death, the Spanish troops left the area. On April 27, 1565, the next Spanish excursion, led by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, arrived with the aim of establishing a colony for the spice trade. Initially, Legazpi sought peaceful colonization; however, his efforts have been met with rejection. In the end, he resorted to burning down the coastal town. about 1,500 homes and the ability to lose 500 lives.
On April 28, 1565, the Spanish mariner Juan Camus found the image of Sto Niño in a pine box. According to the local legend,. The survival of the statue was seen as a miracle by the colonizers. And it has been believed to have miraculous power. A church was originally made of bamboo and mangrove palm and claims to be the oldest church in the Philippines. The image of the Sto Niño is the oldest surviving statue in the Philippines.
As i got the chance to go to the Minor Basilica of St. Niño, and I was captivated by its profoundly spiritual and culturally enriching surroundings. From the moment I got inside, I was amazed by this very profound sense of peace and silence that is surely incandescent. The space exuded a quality air of secrecy, reverence, and devotion, emanating from the people in the area. This group expression of faith enhanced the non-secular surroundings within the basilica.
I was able to visit the Minor Basilica of St. Niño, and I became fascinated because of its extremely spiritual and culturally enriching environment. I am into this high-quality experience of peace and serenity that became surely amazing when I went inside. The ambiance exuded a high-quality air of secrecy, reverence, and devotion, emanating from the people and fellow devotee . This combined show of faith also uplifted the non-secular environment within the basilica.
I now had the pride of traveling to the Minor Basilica of St. Niño, also known as the Holy Child of Cebu, and I have to say that the revel left me sincerely awe-inspired. I missed the place Ma'am @angelicaura when I was still studying in the city, the church of Basilica Minore del Santo Niño is my favorite place to reflect.
