Once upon a time I thought that Mount Bromo was just a place that only had one specialty, namely a volcano that could be climbed. My biggest mistake was not learn it first. Until finally, I had the opportunity to climb Mount Bromo on a Java tour last year.

I was finally able to get to Malang, East Java, which was so far from where I lived. Starting from taking a plane to Jakarta for a 2-hour flight, then having to take a train for 16 hours, until arriving in Malang city, then by car and jeep for 4 hours, until arriving at the destination, Mount Bromo.

It turned out that the difficult journey resulted in many beautiful stories, truly extraordinary views and unforgettable experiences. Seriously. That was my first trip climbing a mountain. I regret never thinking about this before. In fact, everyone who loves Bromo when they arrive there.

My attention fell on one place in the Mount Bromo area, precisely on the expanse of sand called 'pasir berbisik' (in english; whispering sands). The name is not just made up and composed, but has a philosophical meaning of the local community.

The whispering sands are believed to have spirits from nature that can then talk to each other. Do you know the hissing of sand? That is their way of talking and communicating, because nature is a unity of living things as a support for humans on earth. That is why, sand is the same as water and air which have sounds in small volumes, so they greet each other.

The whispering sands are the largest area on Mount Bromo. So wide that it connects mountains and hills to each other. The sand is also very fine, light, and also like 'alive'. Along the way we can see the real beauty of Mount Bromo with a vast expanse of sand. That is why the whispering sands area cannot be separated from Mount Bromo.

In this area, there are not many attractions, at most there are only a few people who rent horses to be used to go around the area or to take pictures. Of course, by using these services, many people are helped financially, especially the local residents of Mount Bromo.

Mount Bromo is one of the driving forces of the economy of the surrounding community, where almost all parts of East Java have extraordinary nature, so that tourism is really very well maintained and utilized as well as possible.

Can you see the many jeeps around this area? Of course, it is a must to use a large and sturdy car like that. I asked the tour guide that indeed the mandatory requirement to enter the whispering sands is to use a jeep, so, the jeep community in this city is very solid in helping Mount Bromo tourism. The reason is also for the safety of travelers so as not to slip on the sand, because as I feel that the sand here is really very slippery, even for pedestrians.

By the way, there is one more interesting fact. There was a famous film in 2001 with the same name 'Whispering Sands' filmed here. It does tell the legend of this place too.

See you the next time hive friends!
