Hello everyone! Continuing with my trip through Scotland, which I already narrated the odyssey it was to get here in my previous related post, I woke up in the morning in the apartment with my friends, we had breakfast and went to the free walking tour we had booked with the company Sandemans.
¡Hola a todos! Continuando con mi viaje por Escocia, que ya narré la odisea que fue llegar hasta aquí en mi anterior post relacionado, me desperté por la mañana en el apartamento con mis amigos, desayunamos y nos fuimos al free walking tour que habíamos reservado con la empresa Sandemans.
For this, we took a bus and sat on the top floor to see the city and take some pictures while we arrived at the point where the tour would begin.
Para ello, cogimos un bus y nos sentamos en el piso de arriba para ir viendo la ciudad y tomar algunas fotos mientras llegábamos al punto donde empezaría el tour.
We got off near the Royal Mile and walked along it. There was always someone playing the bagpipes there. It turned out that it was September 10 and Edinburgh was also celebrating the "marches cavalcade" or something like that. They had put up fences all over the royal mile and there were several horses getting ready for the performance. What is being held is a reenactment of a historical event, when Randolph Murray returned and reported the news of the defeat of the Marches at the battle of Flodden.
All I caught a glimpse of were several horses, music, and on top of that there were some young girls doing acrobatics on the horses.
Nos bajamos cerca de la Royal Mile y caminamos por ella. Allí siempre había alguien tocando la gaita. Resultó que era 10 de septiembre y en Edimburgo se celebraba además la "cabalgata de los marches" o algo así. Habían puesto por toda la royal mile unas vallas y habían varios caballos preparándose para la actuación. Lo que se celebra es una recreación de un evento histórico, cuando Randolph Murray volvió y comunicó la noticia de la derrota de los Marchas en la batalla de Flodden.
Lo único que alcancé a ver, fueron varios caballos, música, y encima había algunas chicas jóvenes haciendo acrobacias sobre los caballos.
It was interesting to watch as we approached the point where the tour would begin.
Fue interesante de ver mientras nos aproximábamos al punto donde comenzaría el tour.
We started at Parliament Square, which was near Edinburgh's St. Giles Cathedral, on one side. There was a monument to Charles II.
Comenzamos en la parlament Square, que estaba cerca de la catedral de Edimburgo St. Giles, en un lateral. Allí había un monumento a Carlos II.
They explained to us that in this square behind the church, is the national animal of Scotland, which is the unicorn. The truth is that these lands are full of legends of fairies, forests, ghosts, and Celtic mythology in general. But this was not the reason why the unicorn was chosen as the national animal, since at the time it was chosen, the existence of this mythological animal was still believed in. It was because of what it represented at the time: pride, purity, nobility and bravery.
Nos explicaron que en esta plaza tras la iglesia, se encuentra el animal nacional de Escocia, que es el unicornio. Lo cierto es que estas tierras estan llenas de leyendas de hadas, bosques, fantasmas, y mitología celta en general. Pero este no fue el motivo por el que eligieron al unicornio como animal nacional, ya que en el momento en que se eligió todavía se creía en la existencia de este animal mitológico. Fue por lo que representaba en aquel entonces: orgullo, pureza, nobleza y valentía.

We returned to the Royal Mile, and there I could see a plaque indicating that public executions took place here, the last one being in June 1864.
Volvimos a la Royal Mile, y allí pude ver una placa donde se indicaba que aquí acontecían ejecuciones públicas, siendo la última en junio de 1864.
Also there was the statue of David Hume, one of the nation's great philosophers, who is believed that if you touch his big toe it will bring you luck in exams. So you could see that the statue had that toe shinier and more rubbed than the rest, due to people touching it.
También allí se encontraba la estatua de David Hume, uno de los grandes filósofos de la nación, del que se tiene la creencia que si tocas su dedo gordo del pie te dará suerte en los exámenes. Así que podía verse que la estatua tenía ese dedo más brillante y rozado que el resto, debido a que la gente lo toca.
We approached the building called Lady stairs close.
Nos acercamos al edificio llamado Lady stairs close.
It is a 400 year old house. The rich families of the time lived in buildings like this. Also from here there were good views.
Es una casa de 400 años de antiguedad. Las familias ricas de la época vivían en edificios así. Además desde aquí habían buenas vistas.
We went up some stairs and arrived at the writers' museum, which is free to visit and I would have liked to visit it had we not been in the middle of the free walking tour. It was housed in a nice little building. was part of Lady Stairs' mansion.
Subimos unas escaleras y llegamos al museo de los escritores, el cual es gratuito de visitar y me habría gustado visitarlo de no ser porque estábamos en medio del free walking tour. Se albergaba en un edificio pequeño y bonito, formaba parte de la mansión de Lady Stairs.
We continued to one of the secret gardens of the Royal Mile. It seems that in the middle of so many buildings in the center of the old city, the old rich had their little piece of peace, many of them are already lost with the buildings between the old and the new, but the tradition is still preserved and you can find small squares through narrow alleys that lead to them, full of pots and flowers.
Continuamos hasta uno de los jardines secretos de la Royal Mile. Parece que en medio de tanto edificio en el centro de la ciudad antigua, los antiguos ricos tenían su pedacito de paz, muchos de ellos ya se perdieron con las edificaciones entre las antiguas y las nuevas, pero se sigue conservando la tradición y puedes encontrar pequeñas plazas pasando por estrechos callejones que te llevan a ellas, llenas de macetas y flores.
We continued walking and I saw St Columba's Catholic Church, decorated with a striking red door.
Seguimos caminando y vi la iglesia católica de St Columba, decorada con una llamativa puerta roja.
And from there we had views of the WeighHouse and Edinburgh Castle.
Y desde ahí teníamos vistas a la WeighHouse y al castillo de Edimburgo
We continued walking to Victoria Street, a colorful street where it is said that the author J.K. Rowling was inspired by the author J.K. Rowling for Harry Potter's Diagon Alley. Since the author was living in Scotland while writing the first chapters of this famous saga. In fact, there is a pub over there, called The Elephant House, which is where she used to sit and write.
Seguimos caminando hasta Victoria Street, una colorida calle en la que dicen que se inspiró la autora J.K. Rowling para el callejón Diagón de Harry Potter. Ya que la autora estuvo viviendo en Escocia mientras escribió los primeros capítulos de esta famosa saga. De hecho, hay un bar por allí, llamado The Elephant House, que es donde ella se sentaba a escribir.
The street leads to Haymarket Square, where public executions also took place, and there still stands a bar called "The last drop" where the condemned to death drank their last drink.
La calle desemboca en la plaza de Haymarket, donde también tenían lugar las ejecuciones públicas, y allí sigue en pie un bar llamado "The last drop" donde los condenados a muerte bebían su último trago.
We then drove to a centrally located cemetery, called Greyfriars.
Después nos desplazamos hasta un céntrico cementerio, llamado Greyfriars.
There, among other legends and stories, there was a very real one, in which a monument was erected to a little dog named Bobby. Bobby was the puppy of a cemetery security guard who was working here, and his dog always accompanied him on his guards. The day this worker passed away, his dog kept coming to the cemetery to visit his owner's grave. There are many stories of other dogs just as loyal as Bobby was, although the best known was Hachiko in Japan, all dogs are just as loving. Little Bobby did not leave his owner's grave until he himself died. The people of Edinburgh knew him and would feed him when they passed the cemetery. To this day he has his own memorial in Greyfiars and there are still people who bring flowers or toys to Bobby's grave.
Allí, entre otras leyendas e historias, había una muy real, en la que se erigió un monumento a un perrito llamado Bobby. Bobby fue el perrito de un guardia de seguridad del cementerio que estuvo trabajando aquí, y su perro siempre le acompañaba en sus guardias. El día que este trabajador falleció, su perro siguió acudiendo al cementerio a visitar la tumba de su dueño. Hay muchas historias de otros perros igual de leales que lo fue Bobby, aunque el más conocido fuera Hachiko en Japón, todos los perros son así de amorosos. El pequeño Bobby no se separó de la tumba de su dueño hasta que él mismo murió. La gente de Edimburgo lo conocía y le daban de comer cuando pasaban por el cementerio. A día de hoy él tiene su propio monumento en Greyfiars y todavía hay personas que le llevan flores o juguetes a la tumba de Bobby.
Here ended the free walking tour, after taking a picture with the rest of the attendees and our guide, we were very hungry and decided to go to eat the famous Fish and Chips from Bertie's that we had seen before in Victoria Street. I had previously tried this British dish on my visit to London years before, specifically in Candem, at a place that had won the fish and chips award in 2018. On this occasion, Bertie's had won the award in 2023.
Aquí termino el free walking tour, tras tomarnos una foto con el resto de asistentes y con nuestra guía, teníamos mucha hambre y decidimos ir a comer el famoso Fish and Chips de Bertie's que habíamos visto antes en Victoria Street. Ya había probado previamente este plato británico en mi visita a Londres años atrás, concretamente en Candem, en un sitio que había ganado el premio de fish and chips en 2018. En esta ocasión, Bertie's había ganado el premio en 2023.
We didn't order dessert because Ilias wanted to try the "fried chocolate" that he had seen in another bar near this street, so when we left, he went to buy it and gave us a taste. It was good, it reminded me a lot of the "fried ice cream" they sold in some Asian restaurants.
No pedimos postre porque Ilias quería probar el "chocolate frito" que había visto en otro bar cercano a esta calle, así que al salir, fue a comprarlo y nos dio a probar. Estaba bueno, me recordaba mucho al "helado frito" que vendían en algunos restaurantes asiáticos.
After dessert, and a little rest on a bench, we climbed many stairs to get to the castle and see it more closely, but we did not enter (the entrance was paid, and we were on a backpacker budget). From there we took some pictures and then went to a free viewpoint from where you could also see the castle, called the "Vennel" which consisted of climbing more stairs xD.
Después del postre, y de descansar un poco en un banco, subimos muchas escaleras hasta llegar al castillo y verlo más de cerca, pero no entramos (la entrada era de pago, e íbamos con presupuesto mochilero). Desde allí tomamos algunas fotos y luego fuimos a un mirador gratuito desde donde se tenían vistas también al castillo, llamado el "Vennel" que consistía en subir más escaleras xD.
In case we hadn't had enough walking and had gone up and down enough stairs in Edinburgh, my friend Mesh wanted to take us to Calton Hill because he promised us that there were panoramic views of the whole city. So we made our way up there. I was already starting to feel sore, and since we had to check out of the apartment we were carrying our backpacks all day, because after leaving Edinburgh we were going to Glasgow.
Por si no habíamos tenido suficiente caminata y habíamos subido y bajado suficientes escaleras en Edimburgo, mi amigo Mesh quiso llevarnos a Calton Hill porque nos prometió que habían unas vistas panorámicas de toda la ciudad. Así que emprendimos el camino hasta llegar allí. Yo ya empezaba a notar agujetas, y además como habíamos tenido que hacer el check-out en el apartamento íbamos cargados con nuestras mochilas todo el día, porque después de abandonar Edimburgo nos íbamos a ir a Glasgow.
We climbed the hill, and there were some monuments reminiscent of the pantheon of Athens.
Subimos la colina, y allí se encontraban algunos monumentos que recordaban al panteón de Atenas.
It gave us time to take enough pictures and enjoy the views a bit before it started to rain heavily. So we got off and headed to the train station, to see that the trains to Glasgow were running late, and then, with all the rain coming down harder and harder, we ran to the bus station to catch a bus so we could go to Glasgow, as we were in some hurry because Mesh had to catch his flight back home from there later that day. In Glasgow Ilias and I would be staying that night. I will continue to continue my journey through Scotland in future posts and I hope my experience can help someone else who is going to visit this country soon 🤗.
Nos dio tiempo de tomar suficientes fotos y disfrutar un poco de las vistas antes de que se pusiera a llover fuertemente. Así que bajamos y nos dirigimos a la estación de trenes, para ver que los trenes a Glasgow estaban con retraso, y luego, con toda la lluvia que cada vez caía más y más fuerte, corrimos a la estación de autobuses para coger un bus y poder ir a Glasgow, ya que teníamos cierta prisa porque Mesh tenía que coger el vuelo de vuelta a su casa desde allí ese mismo día. En Glasgow nos quedaríamos Ilias y yo esa noche. Continuaré continuando mi viaje por Escocia en próximos posts y espero que mi experiencia le pueda ayudar a alguien más que vaya a visitar este país próximamente 🤗.

Ahora sí que comienza lo bueno después de la odisea. Nada más ver el aviso de la parada en el bus de “Mansfield Place” me emociona jajaja a mí me encanta todo lo relacionado con Reino Unido, tiene que ser grisáceamente precioso jajaja.
Mira tú que recibimiento tan bueno, acrobacias en caballo xD presenciaste un evento típico en una fecha histórica, eso es un plus. La versión actual de la magia de los unicornios jajaja.
Apuntado el punto turístico de Harry Potter jajaja aunque lo que más me gustaría sería entrar a pedir una copa en “The last drop”, un nombre muy apropiado.
¡Qué bien que pudiste probar las Fish and Chips premiadas de este año! ¿recuerda las de 2018? por establecer una comparación jajaja. No sabía que preparaban ese chocolate frito por allá, me has creado una nueva necesidad x’D.
Vieron muchísimas cosas en un solo día, con lo agotador que tiene que haber sido lo de las escaleras, aplaudo toda la energía que tienen para hacer un recorrido tan completo.
Hola! El fish and chips del 2018 creo que me supo más soso que este que probé este año, asi que me gustó más el de Bertie's. El chocolate frito estaba bien, calentito por dentro y rebozado por fuera xD. Energía teníamos que tener porque solo teníamos ese día ya para poder ver Edimburgo jaja.
