Hello hive family, hope you're doing great. Today I set out on another journey to visit St Barnabas Anglican church which is located in Ngogwugwu Ojoto. Anambra State. Its postal code is 434116. This church has a rich history within the Anglican community most especially within the region as it appears to be one of the first Anglican church buildings that was erected in the area, though the exact year of its establishment is hard to tell even by many who lived within the region but it is remarkably known as the oldest church in Ojoto, Anambra State, Nigeria. It hosted the wedding of Maxwell Samuel who later became an archbishop in the year 1969. One can literally tell from the outlook and pattern, the type of doors and windows that were used and the years back when those types of doors and windows were the real deal.
The church is closely surrounded by buildings of the occupants of the region which is spread out to the far ends of the location. The region is not densely populated like in major cities and from my observations each building within the region has a large compound which is mostly fenced but Ojoto, a developing town, has a big land mass. The region the church is located is approximately 149 meters above sea level and the church serves as a place of worship to the indigenous and non indigenous members of the community and a place where they gather to hold meetings when there is need for any community gathering.
Though I was shocked at first to see a church building that old, my second discovery which surprised me more was that the church building wasn't abandoned and in fact it was being used by multitude of people as a place of worship. When I got inside I saw a lot of speakers which were mounted on the walls on different sides and angles. I saw a place designed like an iron cage which can be seen through and that's where they lock up all the important instruments especially the church musical instruments because looking at some of the church windows it seems some have broken some of the glasses to make their way into the church in the past. So it explained more about the iron cage for extra security of important gadgets.
There are not many patterns or designs on the wall or body of the church building unlike some other churches I've visited.
From biblical teaching I know that the presence of the holy spirit may not be felt in the most beautiful churches depending on the nature of things people indulge in doing inside the church, so I'm not judging this church building for having a simple different appearance, In fact it made it look even more special and remarkable. Even as a very old structure I believe there are many historic events that must have taken place in it which certainly will include people's wedding ceremonies. If it were to be in NFT the building pattern will be super rare or even more difficult to find as there is hardly any building that is currently done in such unique patterns.
Ojoto as a developing town is not far from Onitsha, the city popularly known to be the region where the largest and the biggest market in Africa is located. Onitsha is about 13 kilometers away from Ojoto and St Barnabas church is very much known by people in Onitsha, Obosi, Oba and New which are towns and cities which surround the region. When I got to understand that this church has really been old was when someone in the church said that the church has always been as I saw it for many years and that the first time she saw the church was when she was little but now that she is an old woman, the only thing that has changed in the church was the decoration of the church alter.
Inside the church when I observed the church altar, I noticed tiles were used to beautify the frontage and then a big chandelier with bright light at the center.
There were many chairs and the church environment was very clean, though I didn't see many flowers but its appearance is quite unique in its own way. I saw a big craft work in the form of a logo on the church wall which bears the church name and it seemed to have been done recently because it looks new and wasn't painted together with the rest of the wall.
Through out my stay in the area my joy remained that an old church building can still serve as a good meeting point and a shelter for the gathering of the people,
Thanks.
Look at some very beautiful pictures my friend
Honestly i'm glad you like it, thank you.
Very fascinating building :)
Sure i felt so when saw it to and it was the oldest church in the region, a true monument.
