Start of the Trail🚩🌳/Caracteristicas del sendero🌍🧭

In total the walk is approximately 8-10km, I recommend a day that is not rainy because there are stretches where you will walk on sandy paths, bring hiking boots and a walking stick, this trail is not signposted and on the contrary is personalized by me following the route that I show you on Gmaps, starting point: (38.876755, -9.323111) street "rua pinhal de erminda". It is not a very demanding route but I do not recommend it if you have small children.🚩🧭

"Rebanque" is a fairly small village of just under 500 people that despite being in the middle of nowhere and being isolated, there are records that it was inhabited in the 11th century, in other words, it is too old, possibly in the era of the conquests of Portugal, it is an area with large valleys that are surrounded by several small hills, this area belongs to the municipality of Mafra and therefore we see the Mafra nature reserve which has an area of more than 20km and a height of 500 meters, famous for housing the "da Pena" Palace, in reality there is a walk from here to the palace but it is quite demanding.🧭🚩

We are on our way entering the village and here we are going to make a small detour to visit a waterfall and other interesting things in "Rebanque". So far it has been an interesting walk with beautiful views of the valley, nothing demanding but it is dangerous. We have to drive next to a road and the vehicles go at very high speed, we have to be very cautious. I was looking at another alternative but there isn't one!🚩🧭

Detour to the Rebanque waterfall🚩🌳/Devio a la cascada Rebanque🌍🧭

path to the waterfall🌻🚩

Without a doubt, making this detour is worth the effort because we are going to visit a small waterfall that forms in the rainy months thanks to a small stream produced by the humidity of the mountains. It has no name, so I am leaving you the coordinates: "38.883184, -9.320045". Here you can simply enjoy the scenery and meditate. The path is following the stream. I am telling you this because there is an entrance, but it is not private land over there; the path is over a bridge.🧭📸

I want to leave an important note about the waterfall, all the waterfalls in Portugal in the summer 80% of them dry up and the water does not flow with so much force, so if you visited the country in the summer time do not bother to make this detour because you will find this dry.🌻🌍

I am now very close to Cheleiros and we begin to see the structures of the quite old houses, I see stone fences that were typical of the medieval era and some of these houses have maintained these fences since that time because they were considered areas of historical interest, Cheleiros received the "document" of village in the medieval era in the XI century, since then it has been dedicated to different activities with the cultivation of wine being the predominant one.🌍🧭

Here in the last photo we see archaeological evidence of a discovery that was made in a school in the village, it is a pillar that dates back to the 13th century, also typical of the medieval era. In Cheleiros we find restaurants, inns, wineries; it is a village that deserves a day's visit.⛰️🧭

Roman Evidence🚩🌳/Evidencia Romana🌍🧭

Previously we described how Cheleiros was a medieval town but at the end of the walk we found a Roman bridge and this made us travel further back in time because in the 2nd century AD the Romans had settled throughout this area, it is quite interesting to see the contrast of a very small town but with so much history.🤔🏰

It is incredible how a bridge that is a thousand years old is still so perfectly preserved. This gives us an idea of how advanced the Romans were in their time. This is a typical Roman road, with buried stones. In my opinion, the reason it is so well preserved is because no vehicles pass through it. Being pedestrian, it does not suffer as much wear and tear. This is the Lizandro River. People could probably use the bridge to go north or south of the country.🏰

This is where my walk ends. I really felt quite blessed to be able to enjoy a beautiful landscape and learn more about the beautiful country that is Portugal! I hope to motivate you to come and experience some of my adventures on your next vacation.🏰🚩

Nice walk in which to enjoy nature while learning history. The landscapes are very beautiful so green, although from what you say I guess that in summer all that grass will look dry. I love ceramic indicator signs, you can tell it's Portugal, hehe. The Roman bridge is like moving back in time centuries, certainly, it is in an excellent state of conservation, it is lucky that it can continue to be used. Thank you for sharing such an interesting walk, I enjoyed it a lot.
