The Schiessentümpel Waterfall of Mullerthal, Luxembourg.

The Mullerthal region is often referred to as "The Switzerland of Luxembourg". When at Mullerthal, there are plenty of spots to visit. In the same region, there are various tourist spots, as well as geographical and political landmarks you'll embark upon. Most of them have to do with the river Black Ernz.

The Schiessentümpel waterfall, the bridge, the Mullerthal trap, and the Mullerthal hiking track are all connected and further south is yet another, but lesser known Kallektuffquell waterfall. The Schiessentümpel waterfall is both beautiful and depending on the season, very different.

While a majority of the visitors come here solely for the waterfall, there is a plethora of people that come here for the hiking trails, the Mullerthal village experience, and visitors that want to explore the region that was once deemed dangerous to wander into and even labelled "The Land of the Wolves".

The region, evidently, is now very well connected with well built roads and public transport options make it very accessible. The Schiessentümpel waterfall is down the CR121 road which, for the most part, follows the flow of the Black Ernz River.

There is a parking spot not too far off from the landmark. It is also where the bus route 242 stops to pick up or drop visitors and locals. The walk from this parking spot to the landmark is not too long. There is an easier route: on the pavement along the road headed north-ish, or, the more fun route: Mullerthal Trail Route 3 which heads the same way as hiking trail W7 where it intersects with W6.

The trail is obviously the most fun and exciting route. It is not a challenging trail either. However, due to the rain, the trail has slimmed down and is very slippery as the mud washes away to expose smooth stones.

The forest terrain leads to the waterfall from the direction of the parking as long as you follow the flow of the river. The hike is unimposing even at this time of the year with modest amounts of downpour. It is highly likely to find other visitors with children tagging along which makes this for a very nice family experience.

Throughout the hike, you will be accompanied by scenic views of the Black Ernz River gushing through the passage and the refreshing sounds of the water hitting against the larger rocks.

The forested surrounding and the rocky nature makes it a very adventurous hike. The beautiful autumn colors of the fallen leaves mark the path. The moss on the rocks light up as they get wet in the rain. It is a breathtaking view, throughout the hike.

The waterfall and bridge may be the highlight of the region, but the path leading up to them are also nothing less than impressive. It is hard not to be awestruck and enjoy.

It is easy to recognize that you are very close to the location. As soon as you see a wooden bridge, you'll know you're almost there. With the saturated wooden colors around and excitement, I almost didn't notice the camouflaged bridge.

The Mellerdaller (Mullerthal) Trap is the most recent addition to the Schiessentümpel experience. It is a wooden foot-bridge that leads to and/or away from the waterfall.

It makes for a stunning viewpoint from which either side of the river can be seen. Atop the staircase, on the plateau, is a large board with all sorts of information about the bridge is present. The board also mentions the exact dimensions of the staircase and building strategies. I wish I kept practicing my French after middle school, it'd come handy now. I was left to understand as much as I could from the illustrations and broken Google translations.

The materials of the bridge, namely the wood, was procured from the Mullerthal forests. The entire staircase was put together and built, end to end, in the Mullerthal region. It makes for a beautiful statement piece. I felt extremely pleased standing on this bridge, realising that it was, essentially, the "authentic local experience" I chase in every city.

The Schiessentümpel waterfall is very different during the autumn and rainy weather. Mullerthal is not so popular during such weather. However, this is what makes it unique during this time of the year. The river is much stronger and the flow is heavier in this weather in comparison to the more popular summer season. This is also when you'll find the least amount of tourists and it is easier to manage your pace.

The stones are very slippery and the water is much higher in the rainy season than it is during summer. On the bright side, I have some of the most unique pictures of the waterfall and the trail that are not easily found on the internet.

I was able to climb on some of the rocks in middle of the river that made the visit so much more spectacular. It is a serene view of the river, surrounded by the hymn of crashing water.

Getting down to the bottom of the waterfall was challenging since I have no prior experience of balancing on slippery and sloped rocks. The best pictures of the bridge and waterfall were taken from down here.

During the summer, the water doesn't even come close to these stones as the river is considerably thinner.

The bridge has little to no significance in terms of transportation. It is, however, a symbol of the Mullerthal region. It was built many years ago, in the late 1870s, and has stayed that way. Beautiful craftsmanship is shown in this bridge made of lime and sandstone. It has held itself for all these years. I spent some time on the bridge simply taking in the fresh air, the positivity around me, and being one with the moment.

The wood railing is very new, and is often changed or redesign if and when needed.
There is a flat platform leading down from the bridge to where I was standing, at the bottom, connected by a staircase carved from the stones. However, the flat surface was flooded, and most of the staircase is covered in mud and the natural slopes make it a risky trip.

There some hidden designs carved into the limestone bridge which is now partially covered by shrubs.

The bridge connects the trail to the CR121 road, which becomes the last stage of many visitors who use this crossing to wave goodbye to the waterfall and head towards the parking.

The tranquil setting even with the chaos of a heavy flowing river and pouring rain, is still calming and beautiful. During the quiter times, the waterfall is 3-headed and it is possible to have a small picnic, and go into the water barefoot. Nevertheless, I felt like I missed nothing. It is incredibly fabulous and I chose a time when the waterfall looks much different than most people see.

The small waterfall is at its largest during this time of the year, and the 3-heads are almost unrecognisable. There are hardly any tourists and trekking is much more adventurous.

It is a must visit for nature lovers and a perfect stop at the hilly landscape of Mullerthal- the "Switzerland of Luxembourg", come rain or shine.
