Just recently I went on holiday to the Maldives. I was a bit skeptical because of most of the comments that it was boring, there was nothing to do, just some beaches. Yes, nice water, but nothing more... Lots of similar statements that I paid attention to and was slightly negatively biased.
Despite all the words of people and friends, I decided that I wanted to make my time there interesting, exciting, memorable, because you never know if I will have the pleasure of going a second time. So I researched all the activities that are possible on the islands around us and on our island we were on, of course.
We chose a local island and it was actually the best choice because you get into the deeper side of the small islands, you get to meet the people, talk to them, get a feel for their lifestyle, shop in their little shops (imagine a small garage stocked with all sorts of food, vegetables, packaged treats - Indian ones at that), listen to their music, etc.
Here are some pictures of the island and the local people and me.
I want to tell you, in fact, how I made a dream come true during one of our jet trips. Of course, I got close to a local guy, because that's how to have a great time and not be bored! He took me around to different places, neighboring islands and told me about their culture and lifestyle. One day we got on the jet and drove past islands, lagoons, sand spits that are incredibly beautiful.
We were in the water for maybe 2 hours on the jet ski, quite far from our island.
At one point, he took me to one of the lagoons I've always wanted to see in person. It's about this one. Here's a picture from up high.
By the time I realize we're going to reach the sand spit (that's what the dry part of the lagoon is called) and step onto it, I'm in awe of the beauty of the clear water and the shallows. Unreal blue water. And in general, that we are sailing over it. That was a real happiness for me. The energy I had that day kept me going for a week.

Ooh, it was lovely! There were lots of interesting corals, both living and dead. So many different fish that you can't get enough of. So many all around you too. I can upload pictures of the fish.
No words can describe this beauty! I can imagine the happiness you felt while looking at the peculiar blue colour and that white sand - it is wonderful! 😍

It looks like you have the opposite experience of Maldives to what your friend told to you before going! Picking the less tourist location, having contact with the locals, their customs, and food is the best way to experience and learn about some new places!
