Oh wow, so not nearly as early as I had thought. So was it just considered part of another city before that? I might have missed it if you said so in the post.

It was a town before that. Over here you only become a city by Royal decree, unofficially it was thought if there was a cathedral then a town becomes a city. Not so, the monarch has to say yes you are now a city.

Ah okay, that makes sense! Very interesting. Even the process is so full of history!
