I've always been a firm believer that any day spent fishing, even if you catch nothing, is still better than a day not fishing. It's just one of those truths of the universe I guess. When it was announced that my extended family was going to take a trip to Grindstone City, I was really excited to learn that the rental house had a slip in the harbor.
Even though we didn't have a boat, a slip implied that there was a dock, and if there was a dock, then there was a place for me to fish!
I know I implied that I was finished posting stuff about this trip to Grindstone a couple of weeks ago, but I promise, this is really it now!
It was Tuesday morning when I decided I was going to go out and try my luck at some fishing. I had to first drive around the corner to a local party store and get some worms to use. They didn't have much of a selection, so I just took a container of night crawlers and I figured I could split them up into smaller chunks.
Then, I had to brave the walk down the dock to get to my destination. You can't really see it in the picture above, but there were about a million Trump flags lining the dock on each of the boats. Trump is probably my least favorite person on the planet, so I definitely a little uneasy walking down the dock.
I made it though and before I knew it, I had a line in the water and I was anxiously awaiting the moment my bobber dipped below the water. The dock was kind of narrow, so it was a bit of a chore setting all my stuff down and getting settled into my position.
I probably should have taken a folding chair to sit in, but then I wouldn't have been able to dangle my legs off the dock and dip my toes in the water every now and then.
I tried to take as many photos as I could while minimizing the risk of dropping my phone in the harbor. That would have been a pretty horrible way to end a fishing trip! The water was cool on my feet and although the sun was beating down on me, I don't remember feeling overly hot. There was a nice breeze coming in off Lake Huron that made things pleasant.
I'd been fishing for a while when I realized that I had forgotten to bring my fishing license down to the dock with me. I quickly texted my niece and asked her if she could run it out to me. Normally, I wouldn't have worried about it too much (especially since I had yet to get a single bite). However, the DNR (Department of Natural Resources) had a pretty heavy presence in the area and I didn't want to risk getting my equipment confiscated.
Part of the fun of fishing was just looking around at the different boats and houses that called the harbor home. check out that break wall in the picture above for example. Where do you think that door with the life preserver on it leads?
Just to the left of the pontoon boat there.
Sadly, after sitting out for close to an hour, I had failed to get any bites. Like I said though, it was still a pretty darn good day. It was quite peaceful on the end of that dock. It was getting close to lunch time and the fishermen who had went out early to try their luck were starting to come back into the harbor.
The little shack in this photo belonged to one of the charter companies. I watched them pull in with their client and hang five or six nice looking fish on the board for them to get their picture taken with. Then they proceeded to clean them for the client while they loaded their stuff up in the car.
It was a pretty cool process to watch. I don't know how much they paid for the charter, but they were clearly having better luck than I was!
Just to the left in the photo above there was a public boat launch where people could bring their own boats for a day of fun on the water. I watched a nice fishing boat try to launch, but they weren't able to disengage the boat from the trailer, so they ended up pulling away and never coming back.
I felt a bit sad for them. They were probably pretty excited to get out on the water and unfortunately, they made the trip for nothing.
I carefully took a couple obligatory selfies, making sure I didn't drop my phone or my pole in the water and I was getting ready to come in for the day. I had only gotten many one significant bite the whole time I was out there and honestly it could have just been a weed for all I know.
My original worm was still intact and my resolve was running quite low.
I had decided yep, I'm calling it, when my phone alerted me that I had a text from @mrsbozz. She was up at the lake house and she said that my nephew was trying to find me. He eventually made his way down to the dock, so I re-baited his hook and handed him the pole.
Sadly, he had about the same luck as I did. He said he could feel the fish biting his toes when he had his feet in the water, but I think he might have been imagining it. Either that, or it was just the minnows.
As he was fishing, there was a dragon fly that took a unique interest in our bobber. I am not sure you can see it too well in the photo above, but it eventually landed on the bobber.
I may have not caught any fish, but it was still a pretty great morning spent on a dock in the harbor. I got to enjoy nature, spend some peaceful time in my own thoughts (you might even call it meditation), I got to spend some time making memories with my nephew, and I got some pretty awesome shots for this post.
I call that a pretty great day!
What do you think?
Totally agree with you on fishing.
Whew... Trump. You know, it might shock you to learn there is a MAGA group in Japan (of Japanese people) that absolutely adores him. I just don't get it...
That makes zero sense to me. He is just a vile human. I have a feeling he is going to find a way to win though.
I do a lot of fishing to re center myself. My wife will sit dock side or river side in a hammock which is also a fun experience to share.
My wife usually just reads while I am fishing.
That's exactly how we roll too.
What a shame that they didn't want to bite but at least it seems like you had a nice trip there!

You must be killin' it out here!

Yes, it was a really good time!
Relaxing wait for the fish to bite, never time wasted, more in thought with plenty of nice photography to capture.
Nice morning break, fond memories made with your nephew joining in at the end.

I think it is nice idea to have a chair there but also it's fact that then you will not be able to dip your toes.
Yeah, I think in the end I probably made the best decision. It was pretty narrow, so I might have fallen in with a chair.

I think even though you may not have caught any fish, it's still a memorable experience for the most part. Enjoying the amazing scenery of nature with your family.
Maybe you'll get better luck next time but it still seems like a nice trip, yeah?
Oh yeah, it was a great trip for sure! We had a blast! Fishing was just a small piece of it. Lot's of great memories.
I liked the pleasure of fishing and the thrill of it. I had many good experiences in the river near our private garden. In my opinion, a folding chair can be better than hanging by the legs. Hope you can be more exciting in the future
Thanks, I hope so too! Probably won't be until next year now that I do some fishing again. Unless I make it out ice fishing this year. I haven't done that in a while, so it could be fun!
With this feeling and hope for success, he is a kind of hope for success and striving for it in life. A kind of trial and error
A day fishing is much better than one not, I agree. You might have needed to get out into deeper water, who knows? You didn't lose your phone or have your equipment confiscated so it's definitely a win!
Yeah, I had a feeling I probably wasn't going to catch much up at the docks. Sometimes you get lucky and find a rock bass that puts up a bit of a fight. Keeps it exciting!
My youngest loves fishing too. Often in the weekends he goes out nightfishing with friends. A tent near the water hoping to catch some carps. Mostly the do :)
That sounds like the perfect time to me! I love fishing with my buddy, but we don't do it as much as we used to. Maybe once we are retired!
Nothing better than a day fishing. Even if you don’t catch any fish.
For sure!
I guess fishing is one of those hobby that keeps you calm, its nice to get that thing we can always do that makes us happy
For sure. There was something really peaceful about sitting out on the water. Even when the charter boats started pulling in, it was still kind of a serene experience.
The quitness is what made it peaceful. Looking forward to more fishing post
I have done some fishing with my dad before he passed and with my uncles afterwards and...I didn't always catch something either. I guess that's not always the point of it though, sometimes it's just the time spent sitting there, pole in hand, and relaxing as you have said.
It looks like a nice spot and I get the feeling you found value.

Thanks I appreciate that. You should look up the song "Just Fishin" it sums up what you were saying really well.
Hey there, I'll look it up, thanks for the tip.

Sundays are good days for fishing. Everyone goes to our place only on Sundays. You can go in any other boat. Enjoy the whole day. Thank you @bozz
Very cool! Sundays are a very special day indeed.
You sir are living the life i dream hehe. Always outdoors and fishing on the weekends. If i am to go fishing (i have never fished before hahaha) i would select a place where there is a sure catch. I dunno maybe just so that i dont get demotivated. Haha
It's a fine line for sure! I have been to places where you are pulling them in as quick as you put your line in the water. Part of the fun is the fight and trying to find them! To a point anyway. You should try to get out sometime. It's a great way to commune with nature. Trust me, normally my life is pretty boring. I just pick select moments to share with you here!
Yeah. Im about to do some local traveling soon. And saving up for a trip in vietnam in hanol. My bucket list is to join one of those bay cruises in vietnam.
That sounds like ti could be cool! I bet there are a lot of cool little fishing villages in Vietnam. At least that's the way they make it look on TV. Probably not very accurate these days.
Hehe, your opening statement got me. Even if you didn't catch anything, you got to spend quality time with your nephew and also had your 'you' time, which is very necessary.
Indeed! I was a little happy my nephew didn't find me sooner because it gave me time to just have some solitude. It was a great morning no matter the outcome!
It's understandsble, you wanting to have your solitude.
