Never played disc golf in my life so this might be a stupid question....are the frisbees unique to the sport by comparison to the old frisbees we tossed as a kid?

Not a stupid question at all. You can use those old style discs (frisbee is a registered trademark of the Wham-o corporation) if that's all you have, but actual disc golf discs are smaller. They also have different weights and they depending on what the disc is for they are a bit more aerodynamic. It takes a little bit of practice to get used to throwing them versus a traditional disc.
Perfect explanation!
