Greetings to everyone in the Worldmappin community! Today I am here to share with you my visit to the Casa Paez History Museum. This visit was with my mother, who was my companion during the whole tour. I had not visited the museum for about 6 years (since 2019) and had not returned because the building had closed its doors to the public for issues associated with a restoration and maintenance of the house (year 2020). By the year 2021 it was reopened with new interventions and the solution of different problems that the house had. This weekend I was finally able to see what the house looked like inside after such a long time. This publication belongs to the second installment of Tourism in Carabobo. Let's begin.
¡Saludos a todos en la comunidad de Worldmappin! El día de hoy me uno por aquí para compartir con ustedes lo que fue mi visita al Museo de Historia Casa Páez. Esta visita la realice junto a mi madre, quién fue mi acompañante durante todo el recorrido. Yo tenía unos 6 años sin visitar el museo (desde el 2019) y no había vuelto debido a que el edificio había cerrado sus puertas al público por cuestiones asociadas a una restauración y al mantenimiento de la casa (año 2020). Para el año 2021 fue reinaugurado con las nuevas intervenciones y la solución de diferente problemas que tenía la casa. Este fin de semana por fin pude ver cómo lucía la casa por dentro luego de tanto tiempo. Esta publicación pertenece a la segunda entrega de Turismo en Carabobo. Comencemos.
The Casa Páez is an old building that belonged to the famous Venezuelan procer, participant of the Venezuelan independence struggle, who was called José Antonio Páez Herrera. He was also nicknamed in different ways, among them, “El Centauro del Llano” (The Centaur of the Plains). A nickname that is regularly repeated when talking about him. The house was acquired by General Paez in 1821, but was occupied in 1826. Multiple modifications were made according to all the specifications of Paez, among them, the realization of 12 murals that relate through their illustrations, the events that took place during the War of Independence. These murals were painted by Pedro Castillo (grandfather of the renowned painter Arturo Michelena) and Carmelo Fernández. The artistic creation did not stop in the corridor of the house, but also adorns the Conference Room, where some Greek gods adorn the interior.
La Casa Páez es una antiguo edificio que perteneció al célebre procer venezolano, participante de la lucha independentista de Venezuela, que recibía el nombre José Antonio Páez Herrera. También le apodaron de diferentes formas, entre ellas, "El Centauro del Llano". Un apodo que se repite con regularidad cuando se hablar de él. La casa fue adquirida por el General Páez en el año 1821, pero fue ocupada en 1826. Se realizaron múltiples modificaciones según todas las especificaciones de Páez, entre ellas, la realización de 12 murales que relatan a través de sus ilustraciones, los hechos acontecidos durante la Guerra de Independencia. Estos murales fueron pintados por Pedro Castillo (abuelo del reconocido pintor Arturo Michelena) y Carmelo Fernández. La creación artística no se detuvo en el corredor de la casa, sino que también adorna la Sala de Conferencia, dónde algunos dioses griegos adornan el interior.
The house passed through several owners after General Paez was exiled from the country during the mandate of Jose Tadeo Monagas. At the time the house served as Police Headquarters (where dungeons were added for prisoners), Library, as a center of the Friends of Valencia Society, different owners, until it was granted as National Heritage during the presidential term of Raul Leoni. That passage of constant ownership in the hands of different owners and fulfilling different functions, added a different value, because in the building is preserved heavy artillery, war weapons (swords, sabers, rifles), utensils of General Paez (spoons, dishes, ornaments, furniture), the frescoes of Pedro Castillo, the walls of the dungeon engraved by prisoners, cavalry, insignia, the house itself and so on.
La casa pasó por varios propietarios luego de que el General Páez, fuera exiliado del país durante el mandato de José Tadeo Monagas. En su momento la casa sirvió cómo Cuartel General de la Policía (dónde se añadieron calabozos para los preso), Biblioteca, cómo centro de la Sociedad Amigos de Valencia, diferentes dueños, hasta que fue concedida cómo Patrimonio de la Nación durante el periodo presidencial de Raúl Leóni. Ese paso de propiedad constante en manos de diferentes propietarios y cumpliendo diferentes funciones, le añadió un valor diferente, pues en el edificio se conserva artillería pesada, armamento de guerra (espadas, sables, rifles), utensilios del General Páez (cucharillas, vajillas, adornos, muebles), los frescos de Pedro Castillo, las paredes del calabozo grabado por los presos, la caballería, las insignias, la casa en sí misma y demás.
The house has the Conference Room, the Biographical Room of Paez, the Armory, the Dungeon, the Room dedicated to the War of Independence and its heroes, the Cavalry, the Reading Room and the Piano Room. In the room where there was a series of chronology, I found the boards that were made by the plastic artist, Jesus Medina, who by pure chance I went to give. He proudly showed me his recent work, for indeed, this room did not exist before. I was glad to meet him. I must say that in spite of this, the house looks a bit deteriorated in spite of the efforts. I think that leaving the restoration of the murals unfinished, the addition of a sort of room for evening meetings and the notable neglect of the facilities, mean that the house has lost some value. I hope that in the future things will change. Without further ado, I hope you have enjoyed this journey through a piece of Venezuelan history.
La casa posee la Sala de Conferencia, la Sala Biográfica de Páez, la Armeria, el Calabozo, la Sala dedicada a la Guerra de Independencia y sus proceres, la Caballería, la Sala de Lectura y la Sala del Piano. En la sala donde había una serie de cronología, me encontré con los tableros que fueron hechos por el artista plástico, Jesús Medina, a quién por pura casualidad fui a dar. El me mostró con orgullo su reciente trabajo pues efectivamente, anteriormente esta sala no existía. Me alegro conocerlo. Debo decir que a pesar de ello, la casa luce un poco deteriorada a pesar de los esfuerzos. Creo que el dejar inacabadas las restauraciones de los murales, la adición de una especie de sala para reuniones nocturnas y el notable descuido de las instalaciones, hacen que la casa haya perdido cierto valor. Espero que en el futuro las cosas cambien. Sin más que decir, espero que hayan disfrutado de este viaje por un pedazo de la historia de Venezuela.
